Mad Max - filming dates

Does anyone know when exactly the original film was made?

Wikipedia says "The film was shot over a period of 12 weeks in Australia, between December 1978 and February 1979, in and around Melbourne".

However, with a release date of 12 April 1979 this seems unlikely, and indeed George Miller says here (http://aso.gov.au/people/George_Miller_1/interview/) that "Remember that I spent almost a year cutting it".

So...is wiki a year out, and it was actually filmed Dec 77-Feb 78? Cheers in advance if anyone knows.

I can now answer this myself .

Did a bit of rooting around the Internet, chiefly here: http://www.madmaxonline.com

Filming began Monday 24th October 1977. Not sure when exactly it wrapped but, early '78 I think.

So Mel was just 21 at the time.

Wrapped February 1979 (according to Wikipedia) with the last scene shot "Kirk Bridge Road bridge stunt". First scene shot was Johnny making a phone call from the Princes Highway overpass just prior to Laverton station on Monday 24 October 1977.



Editing a film in a house takes a long time.

By the way, if anyone has good copies of the call sheets I'd love a link!

Dale had a great collection of call sheets laid out at the screening on Saturday, just wished I could grab electronic copies of them all.

I suspect the skyline was shot from somewhere west of the city, but there is so much haze in the pic (can't identify any individual building) and the skyline has changed so much since then, it is difficult to line up.

Peter is right. It looks like out of the current 50 tallest buildings in Melbourne, only 5 of them were built before 1977.
