Ford's new Mad Max car

Post by Peter Barton »

Two new concept cars by Ford Australia celebrate iconic Interceptor coupe.

The high-speed car that literally propelled Mel Gibson to Hollywood stardom in the Mad Max movies has been given a 21st-century twist.

Local car maker Ford Australia has designed a pair of new concept cars that pay homage to the original matt-black Interceptor pursuit car that was based on an XB Falcon Coupe and featured prominently in the cult dystopian Australian film trilogy.

A full-scale version of one of the cars expected to be built later this year though isn't expected to feature in the belated fourth instalment of the franchise.

Advertisement: Story continues below George Miller, who has directed all the Mad Max films since the original in 1979, has started filming the provisionally titled Mad Max 4: Fury Road, though Ford says its designs are a celebration of the cult series.

The new concept vehicles drag the weapon-toting mean machine theme into the future, thanks to Ford's Australian design team.

Nima Nourian's sleek single-seater dispenses with machine guns and instead opts for an "industrial-strength" taser mounted under the bonnet to zap cars to death, while the front bumper's extendable shredding spikes allow it to literally slice its way through traffic.

"There are some great scenes in the first movie with high-speed chases and clashes with the bad guys, and I thought I'd take that one step further," said Nourian.

The second new Interceptor - by Simon Brook - is a more conventional coupe body design and takes some cues from the current FG Falcon, but still hides brutal weapons such as shredders - which pop out from the car's wheels at high speed to "rip up other people's cars".

Which of the two cars makes it as a true-life concept car is yet to be decided, with Top Gear Australia magazine running a poll for readers to vote for the Armageddon-inspired coupe they think best fits the role.

i agree, what a load of backstuff. peeewww. that's nothing like the interceptor or what it means to me. it should be a tough no-nonsense brawler, and those look more like lambowannabes.

Top Gear now have the article and a bunch more pics on their site, you can find it all here:

I like the look of both cars, but I agree, neither seems quite "Mad Max" to me either. But if they do actually go ahead and build this, and put it on display at the Motor Show (as mentioned in the mag), I'll definitely get there to take a look just the same!

Romantic? Plasma turbines? Stealth fighter? Hydrogen turbine linked up to some kind of electric motor and battery pack?

"The shards of metal are titanium which will be used to scramble any electronic signals the outlaws will try and use to disable the Interceptor..."
So no more crossbows, we have tasers?

Is this TRON or Mad Max?

And what is this FG falcon they are talking about?

WHAT COMPLETE AND TOTAL UTTER FUCKING CRAP.

I pray none of this gets anywhere near the movie.

In most product placement deals, the company pays for the car to be in the flick. With that gravelly laugh which journalists have been honing for two hundred and fifty years, Stephen suggested that Mr Miller might want to pay for these designs, to inspire his own creatives.
