I love Amazon.com preorders! The DVD looks like the same one from the previous pressing; the BD has a cool label.
Quick impressions: Overall it looks very dark. They didn't digitally correct any of the color errors (that is, spots in the movie where the film has color damage—it's really obvious after Max drags himself back to the car). And it's grainy, but still clearer than ever. You can actually read the graffiti on the high-fatality road sign, and read all the port rules on the beach sign.
It's going to be a treasure trove for costumers and prop makers!
This doesn't bode well. I have two HDTV broadcast captures of Mad Max. One I captured myself off of HDNetMovies back in 2006. It's generally dark, the print was noisy and the colors were off in places. Still, it was an improvement over the DVD. The second was a Japanese broadcast downloaded off the Internet. It looked much brighter and cleaner than the other one, and the colors looked about right. I'm curious to see which one the Bluray more resembles. Hoping for the latter, of course, but I get the feeling that MGM wasn't too interested in investing much money to put out the best product it possibly could.
Yok, If by "examples" you mean screen grabs, I'm afraid I don't have that capability.
Bio, it's definitely an improvement over the DVD in terms of clarity, but the price of that clarity seems to be all the visual noise that's now visible. (That or they just did a crappy transfer.) I wish I could do a side-by-side comparo; maybe a review site like http://www.thedigitalbits.com will do an in-depth technical review soon.
Also, the DVD is the exact same one from the Special Edition (I compared them and the markings/numbers are identical).
It sounds like the noise you describe is probably just natural film grain, which is okay. However, being 'very dark' with colors that are off in places does not sound okay. I've just placed my order, so we'll see. Thanks for the update.
So it seems they copied the original movie from celluloid to HD. I'm not sure if I were more content with that or digitally remastered version. I think it's this print that gives that vintage look back again. I'll order it myself:)
We need Goarge Lucas to take the film and clean it all up frame by frame and color back etc.. like he had done to the original Starwars films! LOL then it would look like it was filmed last year instead of 30 years ago.
It defaults to the original language stereo mix in 5.1 DTS. The mono mix is also available. And of course the American dub is available. Plus subs from many countries.
