just one small question as an absolutly beginner!

Post by Gothamcityprops »

Hello all,

first of all greetings from a newbie located in germany to everyone.

As a long time fan of the Mad Max movies I now like to start creating a Mad Max one movie like costume. As for that I found 2 homepages were I could buy Mad Max leather clothes from.

So there would be first "South Beach leather" and second "abbyshot" were I could find Mad Max items.

Could anyone let me please know which items from which company are good to use that would be very friendly.

Greetings Guido

Hi there and welcome.
The short answer is that Abbyshot is the best quality but it is also a lot more expensive. Abbyshot sells the jacket and sometimes the gloves.
Southbeach is the only place that sells the leather pants. They also sell a cheaper jacket. The shoulder caps on the Southbeach jacket are not correct (they are made of leather but should be plastic) but they look okay from a distance.

There is a version of the gloves that can be found on eBay that is cheaper than the Abbyshot gloves.

If you look here at old posts in this costume section (search for things like Mad Max and MM1, or just search for posts by me) you will find tips and links for getting some of the other costume items.

Willkommen! Hope you have a lot of time and money to spare. :)

Here's my post on the AbbyShot jacket and South Beach pants: http://www.madmaxmovies.com/forum/viewt ... f=6&t=8476

Search my posts for a comparison of gloves, if you care.

Just go into Mars Leathers in Elizabeth St. Identical to the originals, and made for real use.

I guess this is assuming that someone is in Melbourne. Or their website does mailorder (but I don't know if they ship out of Australia). But more importantly, do they carry styles that are not listed on their website? Because I looked at everything in the jackets section of the website and none of those are correct:

Mars doesn't carry jackets that are 100% identical. Their "Marlon" is the closest, but is not exact. Their jacket was the closest thing we found in the early days of the online fan community. I don't remember all of the differences, but the Marlon has a belt, a pocket on the upper front left, and the seams aren't right on the back. I visited Mars and several other motorcycle shops on Elizabeth back when I was in Australia.
So you'd have to order it custom and it would run you close or as much as an Abbyshot which already has the caps and you know you're going with a company who has made probably hundreds of Max jackets.

Ty very much for all these infos and wow it looks not realy easy to get that suit done correctly right? So if I understand everything correctly here and on other treads the blue Bonds raglan shirt would be a big problem to fins and also the correct and original Rossiter boots. I realy hoped it would be a litle bit much easyer but fine so the hunt would begins after the correct items lol.

They will do any custom work you request, as they make the jackets themselves. Importantly these are real motorcycle jackets, designed for use on the road and not soft leather for handbags. They do cost but they are top quality materials.

It would be interesting to find out how much they would charge for an accurate reproduction of a Mad Max jacket. Probably a lot, but as you said, the quality would likely be very good.

Then again, the truth is that most of us will never wear one of these jackets on a motorcycle (I know there are a lot of people here that ride, but for most of the folks that dress up like Max, it's for costume purposes only), and for those of us in hotter places (like here in Southern California) a very thick well-made motorcycle jacket can be too hot to wear most of the year.

And lastly, let's remember that the original MFP jackets were vinyl, so quality does not always equal accuracy. (That said, I'd rather have the quality of an Abbyshot jacket over the cheaper South Beach Leather - if it weren't three times the price).
