MADMAXII 30th Anniversary - Broken Hill 2011

Post by Gasoline »

I’m not an event organiser and I don’t see myself as heading this event, but somebody has to start this thread.

Next year as you know is the 30th anniversary of MadMaxII (The Roadwarrior).
The film was shot almost exclusively in locations around Broken Hill NSW

A few forum members attended the Ford coupe event in Echuca last year and during the weekend we discussed making a pilgrimage to Broken Hill with our interceptors. The idea has slowly gained momentum and we are now looking at taking the trek in the middle week of March next year.

Mid March was chosen as the main heat of summer will have abated and it should be back in the mid 30’s (97ºF). The landscape will still be dry which will make for great sight seeing and it will still be daylight savings. Also it’s the middle of the lunar cycle so the desert will glow at night.

One plan is take a week to explore the various shooting locations and highways around Broken Hill. This would include Silverton and Adrian Bennett’s Roadwarrior museum.
We want to know if any other fans would want to join us.

And of course…..plenty of on-road action.

I for one am excited about this. I've already spoken with Brad and I'm gonna try to make it. I've been wanting to visit Australia since I first saw MM and I can't think of a better time then the 30th anniversary. Finances willing, I'll be there. 8-)

The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel, it'll take you ten minutes to hack through it with this, now if your lucky ? you can hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go !

I wanted to start this post so that everybody can contribute ideas.
Here are some of mine

Structure
The concept for this event is.... not really a structured event at all.
It is a decision by numerous individuals to converge on one place. This avoids the need for insurance and therefore avoids the requirement to cover that cost through entry fees. You enter the desert and what you do with your time there is your decision.

Cost
It will be a costly trip for everybody involved there is no denying that. Those travelling from overseas have an international airfare to start saving for. Those in Australia have a V8 fuel bill to start saving for. While it is costly, it is probably a trip of a lifetime and probably the culmination of many of our dreams since we first saw these movies three decades. An experience that you could not buy any other way. To have that many madmax vehicles on location at once would normally be unachievable.

One idea I have been working on is organising those travelling from overseas into an informal car pool. People will be travelling from cities so it will most likely be an opportunity to catch a ride with any of the participants.
I am going to suggest that the primary form of accommodation is camping. To add the cost of motels onto the trip would blow the budget out further. Those that want to stay in accommodation are free to do so as it is their own trip. Those that want to camp and still like the idea of an occasional shower have the option of paying a casual rate at one of the many caravan parks in broken hill. I think around $10 will give you access to the shower facilities and allow you to freshen up.

Itinerary
As for how we all spend our time at Broken Hill. I would prefer we didn’t plan out a rigid itinerary for the week. I think as a group, we could hold a group consensus each night or next morning in the dust as to what everybody wants to do, who is going off on their own and who is travelling in convoy. Pure flexibility for everybody.

It's more like a personal adventure for you and you’re free to do what you like.
That doesn’t mean we will arrive and do nothing. It’s obvious that everybody will want to get the most out of the trip that they can and everybody will have a different idea of what their perfect Roadwarrior trip would include.
For some it will be visiting every location seen on camera. For others it will be arriving in a land where time has no meaning and letting their life stop for a few days as they soak up the desert. These are opposite ends of the scale and participants will know where they stand between those two extremes.

There is a fine line between a few mates driving to the same place for some fun and an event.

1st is carefree, nothing official or structured.
2nd is official, structured and requires public liability insurance.

I'd love to go to this, but with an upcoming trip to NZ then a trip to the UK in early October 2011, so time, leave and coin is a bit scarse!

Should I find all 3, my coupe wont be nearly ready to take. But I will get there.
LTDHO = Supercharged Intercooled 5.7L 360rwkw, 6 speed

XB Coupe = Stock Fairmont GS with 351 and 4 speed.

But I really want a 600rwhp XB coupe!
