Roo bar

Post by bike »

Maybe a stupid question, but if the interceptors tailgated the interceptees, also in MM2 when Max rearends the pursuers, wouldn`t it have been obvious to have a roo bar (European bull bar) mounted to limit the damage?

By today's standards - absolutely.
Especially given the use of the P.I.T. manoeuvre by some modern police departments.
The films were made in the late 70's/early 80's when this was not common practice and vehicles weren't fitted with them.
Nearly all states in Australia do not have any front impact protection on their police vehicles even today.

The coupe wouldnt look as "cool" as it did if it had a roo/bull bar on the front.
(A small nudge bar woudlve worked)

Some Police cars here in QLD, especially those in country areas are fitted with those ugly moulded plastic roo bars.
For those who have never seen one, these things replace the entire front bumper and moulded to go around the headlights.

4WD (SUVs) here do carry them as well, due to the fact they are mostly located out in the country areas.

I remember mainly Highway Patrol or State Police having push bars. Some were the simple double up-rights and others were elaborate over-built affairs. Just about every Law Enforcement office in my part of Florida has the 'cow-catchers'. The Highway Patrol seems to be one of the exceptions for the sake of top-end and power loss due to airodynamic drag. Seems they can only get so much from the 4.6. By removing the roof lights and the catcher, they pick up something like 15 miles on the top end. The Crown Vic is dated but they keep soldiering on.

The SO has had the Hemi Charger for a few years and those damned things are fast, even with roof and bumper bars. A good example of overcoming obstacles with brute horsepower.

The city cops have Vics and Chevys, but they rarely get into any high speeds. The guys who work the drug and gang areas are a unit called 'Street Crimes'. They drive blacked out BOB Vics with some wicked looking front bars and no roof lights. The cars are positively evil looking and are rarely seen during the day. The dope boys are scared of them because they seem to just appear out of nowhere. All the windows are covered in really dark limo tint so you can't see if anyone is inside or not. All the party lights are hidden but when they light up suddenly there are lights in places one would never expect. And they are high-intensity strobes enough to throw your brain into an epileptic fit. A lot of Psych-Warfare going on there.
"There are over 550 million smallarms in worldwide circulation. That's one weapon for every 12 people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11?"

"The Teutonic reputation for brutality is well founded. Their operas last for 3 or 4 days and they have no word for 'fluffy'."

basic physics lesson - mass + velocity = force

a roo hitting your roo bar at speed WILL bend it. very few roo bars emerge unscathed from collisions. cop push bars are designed for a different purpose, as are pushcars at the drags etc. roo bars are designed to bend and deform absorbing energy and dissipating it, instead of the CAR and you in it, bending and deforming. think sacrificial anodes on a ships hull.

you would need to put in some considerable bracing and strength which is weight - to carry out the purpose you desire.

They should've at least had a Dukes of hazzard push bar. may have saved some of the front fibreglass.

that there bar, well she steel.just as the toecutter suggests it bends but has no real reflex.bloke here in tassie took on a roo at 120kmh half way round a bend hit the only bloody pole for 300 metres.killed him instantly.have no doubt the bar really stiffed her up....
so long as the paperwork is clean, you boys can do anything you like out there
