Re: Dinki Di Can and Fork display
The can opener is a type of knife sometimes called a British Army Knife or a Nautical Knife. There are some old threads on here about where you can get a close version very cheap and they're easily found on eBay. Karol mentions the knife with photos of one at www.madmaxcostumes.comscag66 wrote:If anyone knows the ID of the can opener and could be
bothered to post it, it would be appreciated.
The reason that it's a "nautical" knife is that the long curved item on the other side from the knife and can opener is a boatswain's spike.

Re: Dinki Di Can and Fork display
I'll weigh in here if no one minds.
The Dobros gauge could be considered a prop since someone might use it as a display item rather than just in a replica car. Nothing wrong with talking about it in this section as far as I'm concerned. Whether or not it should be tagged onto the fork discussion is another question.
As for the fork itself: People can charge whatever they want for whatever they want. But... $500 for the fork is a joke. I'm not sure you'd even be able to get that for the ACTUAL screen-used fork from the movie. I'm sure that no one has actually paid him that price for it. If they have, I guess good for them if it makes them happy and good for him for turning a big profit.
I can also say that I've seen a resin replica of the fork on eBay (probably from the same seller) and the price on that, while not $500, was still too high as far as I'm concerned. As a maker of Mad Max resin props myself I feel like I can say that. That's just my opinion as someone who tries to sell replica props to fans for a fair price (and I still make a profit).
The poly fork looks like a good cast. And it makes a cute little prop display with the can. (I like the way it's set up in the pics above). As far as costume use, it's something that I guess you could carry in your inside pocket but it's not really part of the costume. More like a 'play acting' prop that you could pull out and eat some Dinki-Di with while in costume. For costume purposes then, I'd put it in the same category as the music box. I keep one of those inside my Max jacket, but it's not not visible unless I pull it out and use it so I don't really consider it part of the costume.
Despite all of the above, I think that there's no need for anyone to get especially angry about any of this. It's just a hobby that we enjoy and we should be grateful that there are other people out there interested enough in this obscure hobby to create a small (perhaps dysfunctional) community.

Re: Dinki Di Can and Fork display
I thought someone else had posted that the Dobros gauge shouldn't be discussed in the costumes and props section at all. But now I don't see that post. So maybe they deleted it or maybe I totally imagined it.
I for one do hope that you post any pics you take of the expanded display. I'd very much like to see it. Regardless of what you and I might think is the appropriate price to pay for a fork.
