MM2/Road Warrior SHOULDER PLATE Inquiry

Post by miriyanlarz »

Hey guys...I have a question regarding the MM2/Road Warrior Shoulder Plate. Has anyone bought the replica that Karol was making? If so, can anyone tell me the size in length and width? When I watch the movie, the plate looks HUGE on Max's shoulder. I don't know if it's a camera lens thing or it's the biggest XL football plate ever made. I've recently picked up a set of Rawlings Crusader football shoulder pads (size large) and it still looks smaller than the movie. It measures 12.5" long and 5" wide. What are your thought? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks and Maintain Right!

Hi,

i got the shoulder plate from carol you refer.
i must say if you are in need for one just email him he would be happy to help you out.
indeed the plate is big and i think the padding would do proper fitting on the shoulder.
mel gibson is not a really big muscle actor he was just in good shape i dont know how much he weighted maybe some one knows here :D
if you want a accurate plate get the resin plate carol is making it has a great price also.

sucses.

Thanks framed! Any chance you could measure the plate length and width and let me know? I just want to compare it to the sizes I have. I'd really appreciate it man. Yeah, I contacted Karol and he's not producing the plates anymore at this time. I hope he's doing okay. I'll probably write him again to follow up...

The accurate plate IS roughly 12 inches by 5 inches, so yours is the correct size. If you post a picture of it I can tell you if it is the correct style of Rawlings plate as well (but that's only if you want perfect accuracy, most Crusdader Rawlings plates will be pretty darn close).

It is true that Karol and I are not make any more resin shoulder plates right now, but does not mean that production won't start up again sometime in the future. He and I are just very busy with other things right now.
Best wishes,
J

Thanks jwrites! I'll upload a picture of the exact type of pads I have. If 12"x5" is correct, then that's what I have, but it looks smaller in person than the movie. Hope you guys are doing well!

Hi, are these the actual pads you have, or just a photo of the same type?
The pads in this picture look great. Appears to me to be the correct plate and those are getting very hard to find these days. Mind if I ask where you found them and how much you paid?
Another good thing about the pads in the pic (assuming they're yours) is that the white vinyl on the inside near the neck looks to be in perfect shape. The vinyl on these old pads is often torn.

The other problem with vintage pads is the underpadding that's needed to put under the plate. It's often in a rotted, torn or hard and brittle state.

The only thing I can see about the pads in that pic that doesn't look 100% accurate is that there two rivets next to the strap near the bottom. Max's only has one rivet there. But that's a very minor difference. You'll see in the movie that Max's plate has a single hole there from where the single rivet was removed. But you could just remove both rivets and then fill in one of the holes before you paint it all black.
Congrats on a good find.

Hi jwrites: Yes, the pads I have are the actual one in the photo (sorry for not clarifying earlier) but I didn't take the picture. It's in the same condition as in the picture. I found them on the collegejersey.com website and I paid WAY TOO MUCH for them -- $125.00. I don't know if I'm a hardcore fan or just a lunatic (or both), but I want to get my jacket right (I also found this particular piece very interesting). I currently have a junior size plate on, which is slightly smaller than this one, and it's a different series of Rawlings. This plate measures 12.5" long and 5" wide. Looks great and in excellent condition, but I just thought it was a bit too small compared to the movie. Maybe my eyes are messing with me. The under padding is in great condition, but moreso of a slick 100% nylon covering unlike the cotton/nylon coverings that later versions. I haven't done anything with it yet and even have some doubts about keeping it (may put on eBay...I dont know) -- just depends if I'm happy with what is on the jacket already. Thanks for the feedback!

If you do decide to disassemble that set to use the right side plate and the padding, don't necessarily throw out the other half. We may have uses for that too...
Let me know what you decide to do with them.

Will do! I'm also moving from the Seattle area to the Los Angeles area at the end of this month. I may not have time to work on any projects but I'll keep in touch. Hoping to make it to RoadWar Weekend later this year!

Feel free to get in touch once you settle in to LA. If you're putting together a whole MM2 outfit Karol and I can certainly gives you some tips and show you some of our work.
Do you have your base jacket yet? The Southbeach one can be a very good basis with a few modifications.
Good luck.
