Gyro Captain coat

Post by A Quick Fella »

Gang,

I'm working on a Gyro Captain costume and I'm trying to find a good coat to use. I have a brown leather trench coat, but it's not quite right and would require a good bit of modification to be accurate. Anybody know of a good source for the trench coat? Even some more details on the type of coat used in the film would be helpful. Karol's site doesn't have much on the coat.

Brown trench coats seem hard to come by, but I can find black ones all over the place.

Along those same lines, the Gyro Captain seems to have something hanging around his neck on a string. It's visible in the scene where he first meets Max. You can see it hanging as he has the crossbow on Max, and the string is visible when max has him on the ground with the knife to his throat. Any ideas?

His jacket, helmet and goggles all appear to be WW1 vintage; I'd try some place like flightjacket.com (IIRC). I did some searches on "WW1 aviator coat" and came up with a lot of leather flight jackets, but few trenches.

I see the string you're talking about (when Max has Gyro on the ground), but the only thing I see hanging is a suede leather pouch that appears to be pinned into the inside of the right side of the coat (unless the string is caught on a button).

If you've seen the blu-ray version you can also see some red star shaped trinket hanging around with the pouch. i don't know where it's attached though because it doesn't have much screen time.

Hey, I did a search on eBay for "vintage leather car coat" and came up with a lot of possibilities. But since you already have a leather trench, buying another might not make sense. FWIW.

Thanks for the idea. I didn't find much under 'car coat', but it did lead me off in another direction and I found some things that were promising. Now I just have to decide if I want to drop $450 on a costume piece.
