Bayonet

Post by crossbowarrow »

I've been looking around and it seems nobody has mentioned this. When Humungus is grabbing the second three-pronged spear,
some type of bayonet is clearly attached just above the spear. Does anyone know what kind of bayonet this is?

He's got a bayonet on each side of the Humungus Machine. A while back when I was building it I think I started a thread about what kind of bayonets they were. I took a quick look and couldn't find it. The Armourer and I had a discussion about what type they were, and I think he had it narrowed down... but for the life of me I can't remember what they were! I ended up using M1 Garand bayonets. Maybe he can chime in and let us know.

I can't remember our conversation now and I can't find my DVD copy, but I think it was a Vz24 or a Columbian Mauser bayonet. Those two variants stand out in my mind. Maybe Cueball can get us a high-res pic?

Found it, at least part of it...

From the armourer on page 6 of the Building the Humungus Machine thread:

"I'm working on your bayonet you asked me about. I think it's for a Spanish Mauser but I'm not for certain. But I have seen that same piece at the gun shows so I'll see if I can find you one at a decent price. There's a big show in 2 weeks and I'll add it to my acquisition list. At least now I know what to look for."

So maybe that's it.

It does seem a likely candidate, at least it appears to have the same dimensions as the ones in the movie.

That jogs my memory now. I stopped looking for one because the shows in Tennessee were just awful. I'm back in Florida now and am looking forward to better offerings. Are you looking for one?

Nah, I'm pretty happy with the M1s. If I were to ask you for your help, I'd need two of them and if I remember correctly they are quite pricey. Even if I got them I'd have to take pieces of the machine apart to mount them which isn't fun. I'll just have to settle for being inaccurate. Thanks anyways!

I agree, Dave. The Garand pieces look just fine. And 99.999% of the viewing public won't notice. The remaining fractional percent only applies to us obsessed, stitch-counting types who notice details that small. My friends hate going to movies with me.
