This Blighted Place

Post by nfpgasmask »

OK folks, I just started a blog for my build-up. I posted everything I have from the beginning to now.

It will be slow going, but I plan to keep track of every bit of progress here:

Thanks for the encouragement! I know I am going to need every bit of it! I feel good about getting it fixed up, especially with all the patch panels, its just a little frustrating considering I started my dealings with Cam in 2002, got the car in 2009, and won't likely be "done" for several more years. Well, at least maybe I will have the coolest car ever made to drive around in my 40s. ;) :o :|

Thats about average for rust on these 35 year old cars, and yours is actually better than some I've seen here in Aus which people have bogged over and trying to pass off as surface rust. These Fords were notorious for rust issues. My father had one that started showing rust 3 years after he brought it new!
You'll also have the confidence that you've fixed the rust issues and know that in 5 years little hidden surprises won't suddenly appear.

when you pull the front panels off and see the bulkhead rust...

have yet to see a unrestored falcon with no rust. also - old man glue or silicon - that shit gets squirted everywhere. i guess to stop water leaks, but it just sent the water somewhere else to cause rust.

Wow, that car is Rough! (amazing someone in oz would even sell something in that bad a shape, but never know I guess...)

Good luck with the project !! Main thing is rounding all the coupe-specific stuff to start with at least...

I would imagine a restoration shop competant enough to handle that repair correctly is going to shock you with a quote... you might think about buying some sheet metal fabrication equiptment perhaps and making a go of it yourself ? (maybe even take a class at a local school or something to get you going on metal fab and welding if you are not already good at them)

Doing the job myself is still an option. I am not opposed to it. With the condition of my car I am not counting anything out.

I have welded before, its been a while, but I have a steady hand so I think I could do it. The fab work on the other hand is what scares me.

Practice is how you learn :P

I know real metal guys have years of experiance to be really amazing at it, but with some time you would be amazed what you can do, if you have the 'knack' so to speak at all. Just having good equiptment to start with will help alot too. Maybe get (if you have not already) a catalog from Eastwood and take a look at some of the things they sell, to give you an idea.

Back to my own LS1/6 speed swap into my LX Torana.. 8-)
