Night Rider more menacing in American dialog MM version?

Post by JMChladek »

I can remember the first time I saw Mad Max on TV, it had the infamous American dubbed dialog. Of course, the MGM DVD allows us to watch the film either with the American dialog or the original Aussie dialog. Naturally, the Australian dialog I personally think is better throughout the film given its origins and location and I am probably in the majority here. But, there is one exception to this IMHO. I listen to the Night Rider talking on the squak box and in Aussie dialog, he sounds just like a slightly nutters Aussie next door neigbor, or maybe a nutty football fan. He doesn't sound like a maniacal killer. Now in the American version, he sounds like a real bad mutha, like a biker dude (or a heavy metal singer). Too bad they couldn't have Lemmie from Motorhead voice Night Rider. ;)

Of course, I have to wonder if this could be why a deep voiced actor was casted to give Lord Humongus his very distinctive deep voice in Road Warrior? The voice can make it or break it afterall.

You might be on to something there, as far as MM2 dubbing. If you watch the American trailer, Humungus has a terrible cartoon voice that I'm sure was done by Warners for the American market. But also notice that when Max says, "You wanna get outta here...", his voice is much higher. They obviously looped Mel later to give him a manlier voice.

Anyone have a Youtube link to these parts of the American dubbed film versions? I've heard the Humungus in the trailers and I agree, he did sound like a cartoon or something.. LOL! I own the Aussie versions of the the trio, so I haven't heard the Night Rider in 'American'; but personally, I loved the way he played the part and doubt a dubbed voice would have fit his character the same.

Having grew up with the American version and only finding out about 6 years ago that there was an Australian soundtrack...i have to say,ive never watched the American version since.I kinda find it insulting that the original had to be changed.as for the trailer featuring the humungus...just plain embarassing.

So does anyone prefer the us dub? (it's your opinion, and you're entitled to it). watching the above youtube clip, makes the movie seem 'dumb' or not as serious.

I think the only good dub is the Night Rider. He does sound more of what his looks would make you expect not sounding like a 14 YO kid waiting for his voice to drop. It sounded very pro wrestler to me . Spoken from deep down instead sounding like his shorts were too tight ,LOL
