Is there a song that features some prominent didgeridoo? Even if it's just a soundtrack piece it might be worth throwing in there.
Nothing gives the feeling of the outback more than the sound of a didgeridoo.

And some early 80s Aussie bands might be good too (early Midnight Oil, INXS etc.) Just pick the more rockin', harder edged songs and it should work just fine. You might even find a Men At Work track or two.

One more, you gotta have that song with the saxophone playing at the Atomic Cafe just before Max challenges Blaster to Thunderdome!

Again, great suggestions. I knew I wanted some Metallica in there for the fans, but had no idea which songs. Wherever I May Roam: perfect description of Max's life! Fuel is a great one too.
I Know Rob Zombie is pretty popular with the fans - I was thinking More Human than Human. Thought it had a better groove.
According to the plan, the Atomic Cafe will be a tent pavilion. Would be nice to have some music - but maybe it's best to just play the radio station in there.
As far as "Licorice Ride," there just isn't enough song. With no beginning, and very little usable audio (remember the camera switches from interior shots to exterior shots) it would just be too awkward to play it. We do want to use it, however, and will attempt to throw it into an advert and do some looping if necessary. Or maybe I can finish my techno remix of the song.
And as you Aussies know, there was that band Yothu Yindi that had plenty of didge scattered about. But unfortunately they reached their popularity in the late 80's/early 90's - and so they sound a bit too much like Milli Vanilli or C&C Music Factory. Their song "Treaty" seems like the best to use, but if anyone knows of any appropriate song with didgeridoo, or even a soundtrack that features a heap of didge, please let me know.

There is some creepy atmospheric Aussie music in the movie "The Last Wave". It sounds like Tangerine Dream with some Digi mixed in.

A very good point... but to me (at least) it begs the question: what would it take to have someone make up, or 'complete', the rest of the song (lyrics and instrumentals) and then record it, professionally or otherwise? I'm sure that getting a professional band to do a professional recording is big bucks and unlikely. But amongst this community someone has to have some kind of alternative. It wouldn't have to great quality, either; less-than-perfect would fit in with what we are doing. So how 'bout it? Anyone have some ideas? I know I'm going to ask around.

Another idea: have the song that Goose is singing in the Ute play as some kind of background music for a commercial.

Recording Licorice Ride would take a lot of talent and some money.
First of all, you would need to find some talented musicians - a good singer who could belt that song out, plus a band who could play to that funky time signature. I've been playing drums for a while - that verse is tricky. And there is some brass in there as well if I remember correctly. Plus someone who could write some good lyrics.
And if you have all of that talent, might as well make a decent recording. If you know people - you might not even have to spend any money. If you can get it done, more power to you. If you can make a Humungus vehicle, then I'm sure you can get this song taken care of!
It might be easier to just get a sax player to record all of the Mad Max-related sax (Jesse's song, Ton Ton Tattoo's song).
