Max Van

Post by Max_Van »

Going at a crazy pace to get the van finished for the meet.

I have about 90 screen shots to work from to re create the van but any additional information from members here would be appreciated.

I have used a turbo 400 trans in this build but I think the original was a 4 speed manual? True/faulse

The headlights have been confirmed as being ford XC GXL fairmont so i am using those for the build.

The step through section in the van to the back is not a single wall but is built out with shelving. If you mess with the contrast and brightness in the farm house scene where max gets the shotgun out of the back you can just make this out. Still unsure what the silver things are on the shelving about half way up the boxes. Any help on that would be appreciated.

The mags are ROH Wildfire 14 x 7 on the front and 14 x 8 on the back. the spare is a 14 x 7.

The mural is on the drivers side only, with blackout on the passenger side and lower tail gate. Unsure why but someone here may be able to help out with that question.

Still hunting for the cream/brown shag pile carpet for the back.

Unsure what the speakers are mounted in the side boxes to the rear of the van.

The grill and lower section is HJ caprice without the badges.

The correct color is HJ mandarin red. Be aware that there are three main types of mandarin red.

The roof rack is a hard one to track down but i got one. It's also referred to as a coffin rack. Round chrome tube, not flat side like so many i looked at. There are also chrome sliders on the roof.

The drivers door has the caprice remote mirror and the passengers door has the stock square head mirror.

The dash is HJ GTS with the silver inserts. The steering wheel is also GTS without the gts badge on the horn.

Will add more info and pics when i am more awake :)

Cheers,
Troy

Regarding the mural being only painted on one side, I was told this was simply because the guy who owned at the time had run out of money to get the other side painted. So it wasn't particularly the intention for it to be that way - if you got murals painted both sides, I'm sure you would be forgiven! As far as I'm aware, the owner sold the van without ever finishing it (after the film was finished being made, but before it came out), and I've never tracked what happened to it beyond that.

I did have a contact for the brother of the guy who owned the van a few years back, he was going to get back to me with some photos at one point, but unfortunately never did - sorry I can't help you out further. I've been trying to find his contact details again lately, if I do turn up anything I'll let you know, but I'd expect if would be a while before anything comes of this (and that's if I can find the details!)

Thanks for the info :)

I would like to leave it true to the film so i will keep the mural on one side only. Would be fantastic to get more info on the van if you can find the contact info. To my knowledge i dont think anyone has done a clone before so i am trying to get it as true to the original as i can.

Thanks again for the reply and best of luck locating the contact details :)

Cheers,

Will be neat to see the van again. After you get the roof rack I suggest getting the luggage and bags and stuff as in the movie to put on the rack, will add a nice authentic touch. Maybe even find an old piece of white gate wood and stick it in the grille (though not in a way to harm the grille)? And you could even go a step further... get a chain with a (fake of course) human hand that looks like it was ripped off and wrap it around the back of the rack for car shows.

Hi mate,

We already have most of the stuff to go on the roof rack.

Sleeping bags with black/red covers
White and blue surf board
Yellow plastic jerry
Clear plastic container
Spare wheel with flat tyre :)
Green canvas bed roll
tent in orange cover

Will get a piece of wood painted white for the grill and might even get the chain and hand, but too many other things on the list to finish and time is ticking.

One thing i am having a lot of difficulty tracking down is a set of the original ROH center caps for the wildfire rims.

Jason from long beach customs and myself should be hanging off the end of the spray guns soon so it's looking good. Just a matter of re assembly and recreating the mural after that......all sounds so easy when i say it like that :)

I could have swore i saw a surf board on that roof rack at one time... i think when they pull up to the mechanic shop? I would have to check on my DVD again somtime. I always thought gee why doesent anybody make more of the other repilca cars from the first movie?! Im a Ford guy myself but the night riders car was neat to look at! Also somebodys making the red XA Bat car from MM2, how about the red holden with the 40's grill? In MM1 in the parking lot were jonny the boy is jacken with the Gooses bike there is a cool blown T bucket/hot rod parked in the lot. Could have even been the actuall blower heard in the movie for the bOb in the garage? I know im opening a can of worms saying that, but with all the dubbed in sounds etc.. who really knows? I know some of the fake electric driven blowers sound simalir but not exactly like the movie. I have seen and ridden in a few 6-71 and 8-71 blown cars and there is a diffrence there. especialily when reving under a load!!! Bad Ass! Just wanna see other cars too!

There certainly was a surf board on the rack. Single fin, wedge tail, white with powder blue sides.

Not too many of these boards around these days but all the rage in the 70's :)
