Ignoring Certain Users

Post by PursuitSpecial »

Tired of reading garbage on this site like I am? Well there's an easy way around it.

As discussed as a side note in some other posts you can actually "ignore" other members so their posts don't display.

If you see a member that has nothing to contribute, or you think is just out to cause trouble, do not reply to them.

Just click their username and then click "Add foe" then click "yes". Simple as that. Works great.

Thanks again Cueball!

It works beeeyootifully too.

Imagine it's like your wife is really ragging on at you but you're standing there with your ear defenders on grinding away or your favourite project in the garage. You're aware she's there saying something but you're blissfully unable to hear her and you're content to keep it that way.

Or better yet, if you're in a childish mood, it's like you're holding your hands over your ears and singing Lalalalalalalalaaa while that objectionable piece of shyte person* is trying their desperate best to annoy you, but you really can't be bothered to acknowledge them.

Praise be to Cueball for bringing this to my (our) attention.

Thanks mate!! It's a whole different forum now

This is brilliant -

By god - the quality of the board and its posts just increased 10 fold.

This is the greatest thread ever.

Instead of having to do this, why does this board still have no moderation to keep things in check ?

I've given up here....and sure won't get many decent new folks around once they start seeing all the stuff going on...oh well..

Yep,resorting to excluding members just by the click of the mouse does seem to be an extreme thing to do but here is what I'm curious about,we have had foul mouthed insults on here recently, including from a couple of 'new' members posting in retaliation to the 'other new' members, alley cat being one and also a very respectable member on here who also couldn't resist using the full 'F' word in his response to a dig at him, this to me is just as bad as all the other stuff going on and I would expect these 'long timers' to show a bit more maturity in order to steer the forum back onto the right path,it is not always a good idea to fight fire with fire, the flames just get bigger! now I see that members are using this 'foe' option so certain members...sorry,trouble maker's posts never show...but,have I in fact got it correct by saying trouble maker's and not just 'members'?! the thing is and this is not a dig at you Draknoir but just an observation but I see that Draknoir at last count had 16 'foe's' bannished, which he is entitled to do but how many of them are actually the trouble maker's on here and not just members who didn't say or post the 'right' thing? I'm no mathematician but 16 (maybe 17 now!LoL) seems a bit excessive, but I could be wrong and would be interested to see the 'hit list'! my point being that now this option has suddenly come to light how many will use it to bannish a member just because they don't agree with what they may have posted whether it personaL or not, there are a few members on here I know for a fact don't like me purely because our personalities clash and we can't agree on most subjects but I wouldn't ban them nor would I want them to ban me as that will be the end of the forum for sure, you'll have a small group of members talking between themselves and half the time the topics won't make sense because half the posts will be missing!

If it's gonna get to the point and it will, where members are banning each other on a public forum then it's bound to spiral to beyond just banning the foul mouthed and that will amount to censorship and being self policing (at the moment!) I would've thought there were enough mature members on here to keep things calm rather than sign up as someone else and post 'F****** W***** in big red letters because that doesn't help at all and I for one don't want to see that plastered across my screen,I'm lucky there are no minors in my household but I'm sure that's not the case for everyone!

I hear what you're saying Adrian and I agree in part. The thing is banishing the trouble maker from a thread, at least from what I'm able to read, still leaves me the option of being able to see whatever he's said. That was how I was able to see what Sockpuppet posted with his drawing. However every single posting that his alias's have posted have been abuse or some snide remark about what was being talked about in the thread, so just blocking his posts from appearing is really no loss to me.
I added another to my list just now. Here's how I did it:

RIGHT click on the offending person's name and select open in new window
Click the add foe option below the name.
are you sure you want to do this?
Click yes.

Job done. No more readable postings appear thereafter from that individual UNLESS I WANT TO MANUALLY OPEN IT TO READ IT... and that's the beauty of this foe thingy. Try it Adrian, I think you'll be pleased.

But if I decided to use this option to block all postings by BBB, for example, because he prefers wearing Armani suits over the obviously much better Saville Row type, then that would make me pretty bloody stupid and immature to resort to that type of censoring. It's like cutting your nose of to spite your face.

So far I've added 6 to my shitlist. NONE of them can be considered even remotely productive, positive assets to this forum IMO. Every last one of 'em either is out to cause mischief or just plain attention seeking by putting a deliberate distraction into the thread and making those who post afterwards go off on some rant tangent.

Yep totally agree with you about the big red letters and swearing. No need for resorting to that at all, but it depends on the mood at the time of the person posting. It takes a lot for me to resort to using old Anglo Saxon expressions like that, and if I did, I'd probably got back and edit them out again much later once I cooled down. Incidently if I've used those words and haven't deleted them from any of my postings, I apologise for the offense.

To date, I haven't added Alley cat to my shit figuring he's just venting some frustration and I've cut him some slack. I try and use the Three strikes and you're out guideline. He's justified to some degree too, he just using a sledge hammer tactic to try and kill a flea. Sadly such swearing only makes the trouble maker smile knowingly and try and dream up something else to get his goat a bit later.

But denying that person from henceforth from appearing in threads on this forum takes away a lot of that grief for me, I just follow the thread and read things that have some positive input to it. Know what I mean? If however Mayhem's balls suddenly drop and he stops being so immature, then I might consider taking him off my shitlist and allow his postings to appear once more on my screen. But I'm not holding my breath for that happening this century.

As for moderators for this board... Well I'm wondering if Peter Barton isn't just biding his time waiting to see who would be suitable candidates and cool-headed enough to handle to responsability. Sam, bless him, tended to over reacte in my opinion. I wouldn't want the job as moderator as self moderation from those people posting ought to be excercised long before you resort to having to have someome outside censor things just because you have that option.

Besides moderator baiting is another game those type of shit stirrers like to play.

Anyway enough blathering from me for now, thanks for reading.

Yeah Biker I understand also what your saying.
As for being a Moderator, well, who would want that job with everything going on here? too much going on in my head to see things clearly enough to be neutral enough to make the right decisions for that position,if a person has an opinion then they're no good for the job but who hasn't got an opinion these days? Maybe I should just go bury my head in the red dirt and hope it all goes away!LoL

I could have not saying it any better as Adrian did.
Biker, I would wish everyone would use it in the way you are using it,
but I'm afraid most people will use it a simple shut-up-and-forget-filter.
If the majority of the people just adding others at will, then I'm afraid a real
public discussion will die.
There has been already examples on how easily the foe list can be abused.
I hope everyone is getting what I'm trying to say.
