Cars / Movies & No Respect

Post by Steve Pilant »

We've seen many cars in many movies, but still there are a few makes and models that have either NOT been seen on film or have been underused. We all know the various James Bond cars, Deloreans, Countach etc used in films but here are a few I think didn't get the celluloid exposure and credit they deserved:

1. 69/70 Mustang sportsroof - Keanu Reaves drives a ragged one in Point Break and in Hooper in the end scene, they slam one ino a ditch. When will we see a nice Boss 302, 429 or Mach 1 on film?

2. Pantera - there are some wild examples out there that wouldv'e looked great on film. (The Miami Vice stunt car Testarossa made from a Pantera doesn't count).

3. 427 Cobra - I think Romancing the Stone had a red one, but it was being driven by a damn KID! Why not have a great action sequence with one of these puppies?

4. Yugo Super Sport - Just seeing if you're awake.

Okay - so my list has the Ford theme in common. :-)

Just a few cars I think were represented well on film:

1. The 70/71 'Cuda/Hemi 'Cuda - Phantasm - the Phantasm movies were not the worlds best, but did feature the car pretty well. One of the later Phantasm movies had a sweet Hemi COnvertible clone that was so very cool. They only made like 6 - so we know it was a clone, but it looked good nontheless.

2. Chevys - most Camaros and Vettes were featured well on film.

3. Dodge Interceptor - The Wraith - older cardboard cutout teen villian/revenge film, but the Interceptor was so very cool at the time. The film does look a bit dated, but the Dodge prototype Interceptor still looks good to me. Last I heard it was at PPG headquarters.

4. Delorean - of course!

Regs,

Steve
Gotta hand it to ya treasure - the last of the V8 interceptors. Woulda been a shame to blow it up...

Good Ford LTD usage: Freebie and the Bean, Magnum Force, Gator or White Lightning(I forget)

Ah! I juxtaposed films - I meant "Against All Odds" with Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges. At some point the one lady gets knocked out after pulling up in a red 427 Cobra and a kid hops in it and drives it to hide it.

I think this film also had a Porsche / Ferarri race on the city street which was pretty cool.

the most unlikey car to be used was the mighty Citroen 2CV in James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only...

2CV in french is Deux CheVal = 2 horse (power)

so in one of the most entertaining and watchable chases of all time, a 2 horsepower twin cylinder french shitbox outran and out survived all these BMW 3 series persuers. down a mountain in the Italian/french riveira

One more for you. For those of you who 1)like cool cars and 2) can't stand it when they get the wrong sounds for a vehicle, "gumball rally"('75) has a great assortment of vehicles including Ferrari Daytona Convertible, 427 Cobra, Camaro, Mercedes 300SL, all driven hard AND with the correct sounds.......I read an article that noted that the producers spent a lot of time going out to an open stretch of road to record each one of the cars distinctive voice. The Ferrari V12 and Cobra 427 get a lot of "singing" time on film.

RONIN: Decent movie, great car chases. However, check out the poorly done "enhancement" of the tire smoke when the Mercedes 6.9 reverses and takes off.

Don't forget about the 68 mustang fastback and the 68 dodge charger in "Bullitt". Max could drive, but I think Steve McQueen could have showed him a thing or two in that Mustang.

Well, there was one movie that made me think of

Mustangs, Tauruses (Tauri?) and Thunderbirds a

bit differently. Anybody ever see Jade? Set in

San Fran, corrupt city official, prostitution, dirty

biz thing and a cop that figures it out. Anyway,

there's a car chase that's so beautiful it's surreal.

It's like Mad Max and Bullitt fused at the molecular

genetic level. Chase thru San Fran, flying end

over end, etc. Brilliant. See this flick for the

car chase, but I'll warn you, the rest of it's

kind of dumb.

Yep. CGI smoke takes a long time to render. Like,

A Long Time. (I'm doing it right now) If the director

decides he wants CG smoke, the producers will tell

him "yes you can have it, it'll cost you a bunch of

money, and we can have it by wednesday." That means

some lonely digital artist with no life and every

flavor of top ramen noodles in his desk drawer stays

up until 6 a.m. the night before final delivery.

He gets a couple of hours in the morning to check

bad frames, then goes to bed. Subsequently, the

CGI smoke looks... Bad. They should have gone

without it, IMHO.
