NASFIC Convention/Roadwar 2007

Post by Mitch »

OK guys,

Here's a tentative plan for a pretty good sized Mad Max gathering.

Around Labor Day 2007 the North American Science Fiction Convention will be held in St. Louis, MO. Actually, right across the river, but close enough. It's a pretty big shindig, with lots to do. I was thinkin' , since I'm in charge of Special Events, that I'd invite several Mad Max related guests and have a Mad Max mini-event within the framework of the convention itself.

Tentative ideas:
  • Invite Vernon Wells and Virginia Hey as guests. They could do signings and whatnot. Perhaps other stars?
Invite Mad Max replica owners to bring their cars for a group event/car show. Also would include any/all Aussie cars and Road Warrior inspired vehicles.
Hold above-mentioned car show in conjunction with a pre-show convoy.
Possible vehicular combat reenactments including the blowing-up of a derelict car. (We know some licensed Hollywood pyrotechnicians eager to demonstrate demolition... This is still in the brainstorming stages.)
Panels and discussion groups on all things Mad Max. Karol and others could host a series of panels on costuming alone. The replica owners could have a panel on how to get an Aussie car, how to make a replica, argue over authenticity, etc.
Postapocalyptic Fashion Show and BBQ (Sounds like fun, huh?)
Mad Max/Road Warrior display booth showing toys, models, books, props and whatever else people lend for display. A Mad Max museum, so to speak.

So, the first step is protect the fuel...

Wait, no, the first step is to gauge how much interest there is in this Roadwar Event. I need to be able to present a rough idea of how many fans would come in for this and especially how many Mad Max cars I could get besides my own sorry-ass fleet.

Jim? Gizzi? Doug? Mark? Anybody?

Thanks,

Mitch

Good on ya Mitch!

Adding this to an established Con can only bring legitimacy to the cause. Roughly the geographical center of the country, decent weather, *great BBQ* and oportunities to do more than *just* MM stuff.

Smells like a winner to me!

Too bad I moved to Oz...

Just as background, the NASFIC is the North American alternative to the annual World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) when it's held overseas. This year, St. Louis won the bid and will host in 2007. There is a wide variety of people from around the world that attend, even when Worldcon is held overseas. For instance, fans from the UK might find it easier to come to St. Louis than Tokyo.

We anticipate quite a few people, and it would be great to have a gathering of all the replicars we could scrape together. All fans and owners are invited, and the more cars the better. I'll try and post a link here soon, but for now, just look up Archon or NASFIC. Would be great to have some Aussie fans show up. I'll take ya all out to the local Outback steakhouse.

Biker,

There's a difference between the Labour Party and a Labor Day party. Like a 'roo and a frog. Both hop, but... Speaking of frogs, how's things in your neck of the woods? LOL! Just kiddin' ya mate!

If you can pull it off, come on over. I'll host a big party and show you guys the sites. Maybe Detritus will shuttle everyone around in his fleet of Opel GT's.

Hey, can someone update the header for this forum?

It's no longer just about the Oct 31 2004 event. It might be keeping some people from checking out the topic.

Anybody thinking about attending?

Well, I was gonna contact/mass e-mail all the US/Canadian replica owners, but I figured I'd post an invite here first to judge interest.

How many replica owners would be interested in attending this event next Labor Day? I have a meeting this Friday night and I wanna be able to tell them that there is a possibility of making this into a significant event.

Any costumers interested?

Any fans in general interested?

No interest, no exploding car...

You decide.

Sounds like fun. I might have the 467 in the Interceptor and at least in primer then, might be a good breaking-in trip. That's probably a14hr trip from the combat zones...I mean Detroit? Have to Google-"Erf" it. No convoy for me...static display only...got the know'n of a thing or two from Santa Anty, and I wasn't even there.

I am way interested... but that holiday weekend has already been slated for a trip to Atlanta for DragonCon. Too bad, as I have a Mad Max truck complete with a speargun weapon welded to the bed and two prisoners tied to the front; along with dozens of Mad Max type costumes, weapons, and armor. I've also made a model car of just about every vehicle from The Road Warrior. Check 'em out at http://www.madmaxmodels.com. I would have loved to show everything off, and I sincerly regret that I can't make it.
