XB Sedan Pt. 2

Post by Mitch »

So last episode of This Old Car when we left the sedan it had been determined that the fuel line needed help and the brake line might be leaking.

I'll do a more extensive fuel line replacement later, but for now I seem to be mobile. The brakes aren't totally bad, so maybe it was the leak at the fitting. I'll add fluid and bleed as necessary.

Found the speedometer cable is not hooked up either, nor is the kickdown lever. Lots of what I call "mystery wires" too...

Just like the Gossie, this looks to be a fun exercise in "what the hell is this and where did it go?".

Who all has sedans? Sound off!

Sedans or coupes..or station wagons or utes..they'rer all the same dude!....just describe the wires and connectors and you've got a fair bet that someone has already been there!

Speedo cable and Kickdown are clip on easy items....if these are out I'll bet my left nut that the Neutral Saftey Switch/Reverse light wires are disconnected too ...they should connect behind the motor above the bellhousing with a staggered connector!...just like every other car Ford built from the 1960's to the late 1980's

P.S.

Don't be afraid ti\o get that alloy master cylinder stainless steel sleeved...it's considered totally safe over here! check out "Brake Sleeve Engineering" online..that's all they do!

I clearly don't... if I did... I would not have forgotten the "pushrod" aspect of the motors in there...

That's what you get for being around peugeot 4 bangers... (and hopefully a 6 banger in the future).

As far as the sedan question, I know there's a lot of crossover between the differnt body styles.

I was just curious who all on here owned sedans, especially over here in the US, as they're less common than coupes.

As I've told may people, these cars are about as complicated as Lego. Fun to play with if you have the time, tools and parts. Take one of those out of the equation and it isn't as fun, but still doable.

The mystery wires come from the ZH Fairlane to XB sedan swap. Not everything was a one for one hookup, plus there's a lot of spliced together confusion. I'll just follow the wiring diagram like I did with the Goss and fabricate new harnesses as necessary.

If it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not. This is a 31 yr. old car and in the condition I expected. It's not like I paid for a fully restored show car. A mate over there hooked me up with an available chassis that came up for sale and installed a motor/trans combo for a few bucks more. I've got the basics to build on, and nothng appears fatal as far as the defects.

Thanks to all for the information and positive comments.

Well Mitch, technically I don't own one, but I have one in my garage at the moment. (don't worry Adrian, I am taking good care of it)

Although I am jonesing for a coupe.

But as an american over hear I just can't get over the strangeness of the 2 extra bloody doors.

All of these Aussie Hi-Po sedans just baffle me for some dumb reason. I guess i have to admit my prejudice and bias. I have been ingrained from birth to see coupes as fast and mean and sedans as grocery getters.

But I must say that John's looks nice with the tri-colors and the front scoop.

I think I have a yellow coupe project in my distant future.

If I ever get my gosling finnished that is.

Good luck with the project Mitch!

Next bit of concern is the wiring. Haven't replaced the ignition cylinder yet, and it may clear up some of the problems. The rear turn signals glow constant amber when the ignition is in the on position. No brake lights or taillights at all. Front blinkers work, along with one headlight.

No working tach as yet, no speedometer (in mph!), but that's due to the disconnected cable. No fuel gauge, but I suspect that's a faulty sending unit. Temp gauge works, but I think it runs a bit cool. I was spitting coolant out of the overflow when I parked after sitting in traffic, but the gauge still read about 3/4 hot. All of these gauges are fully illuminated, so I can see they don't work at night too...

I have an SAAS steering wheel. A bit ratty, but still kinda cool. Sits way back just waiting to impale me in an accident.

Rear springs are saggy. I'll put an extended shackle kit on for now, but I'll need new leaf springs. Wonder if I can just order two sets, one for the sedan and one for the coupe?

I need a center console/shifter cover for the sedan (the coupe as well). Anybody see one in the wreckers, lemme know.

Car made it to the show. Got pretty good response, considering it's a sedan next to the coupe and still dirty and rough looking. I'll try and post some pics soon.
