The Best Vehicle YOU have ever owned?
So I'm heading off to the Big City to a new Job...
The price of fuel is throught the roof (I've sold off the hardtop) and I need a daily, city driver!
I'm looking around at the small fuel effecient cars and don't really know where to start! Can you guys recomment a car to go for (or stay away from)...I have been looking at the Focus/Astra type european cars...but any feedback/advice would be appreaciated.
"Nice doggy..Nice Doggy!?"

I am a bit of a fan of the Subaru boxer 4 engines. They are relatively straight forward, relatively fuel effecient, relatively cheap to maintain and seem not to mind a little gentle abuse now and then.
I also like the fact that the subarus in general don't look as bad as the rest of the crap out there.
And if you can afford an Impreza WRX, those little suckers can scream!
If you don't mind bland, the little toyotas and hondas seem to last forever.
My father-in-law recently sold his 99 toyota carolla bland-o-matic with over 200,000 miles on the clock and had literally done nothing to the car beyond changing the plugs and timing belt (and oil) at the recomended intervals. That little sewing machine didn't even have a single oil leak. As ugly as they all seem to be, those little Japanese roller skates sure do hold up.
"Bit's o this, bit's o that..."

I have a 04 PT Cruiser that I made look like an old 30's cop car. It goes about 300 miles in the city on 15 US gallons, which equals 20 MPG. Highway is about 25 MPG. It's really convienent with the "tall car" stance with a short wheelbase for a tighter turn radius. With the rear seat out of it, you can almost put a full-size dryer in it. Ingress/egress is easier than a normal car because you sit more upright. Yes, it does have funky "old man", retro styling that draws the older crowd, when it was designed for the Gen X market, but it's a useful design for under $16,000 (base). The engine is a Mercedes 2.4L I-4. You can get it in non-turbo-150 HP, base turbo-180 HP, or GT turbo-240HP for about $24K. there's also a plethora of after-market go fast parts for them now, as well as body kits to personalize it your way.

Fairly misleading thread title there..
"Best Vehicle" I've ever had was my Javelin.
Fast & Reliable but drank a lot of fuel.
Now were I to choose a vehicle for an every day commute driver (Assuming I haven't hit the lottery & become immensly wealthy. Then it'd be another story altogether)
I do hear good things about the PT Cruiser. Everyone I Know that has one claims they'd never trade out.
Myself, I'm liking some of the Subaru's.
The wife likes the look of the Outback or Forester and I'm kinda partial to the Baja. (I like having outside cargo capacity but don't need a Lot of it)
Where I live, the 4 wheeldrive is on occasion a MUST. But in other areas, not so much.
An older model car I've had a lot of luck with was the '80's VW Scirocco's.
Definately not super fast but very fuel efficient, reliable and damned manueverable.
Not to mention light enough that I've been able to change flats without a Jack.

...I don't know , I might have to pick more thane one for different reasons.
FASTEST:..my mid '80's purchase of a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback... factory 318 with just a set of Hooker headers & custom duals...2Bbl.& a factory manifold..Center console auto. Drop Down Rear seats...wish I still had it...It would break loose on command..been a Mopar head ever since...
Most Aquired Action..The 1966 Pontiac Bonneville / Superior Ambulance Conversion..low cost ( $432.00 u.s in 1987 )...low miles ( under 40k )..well maintained..overpowered ( 389 H.O. Package )..4 wheel DRUM brakes.yikes!..BIGGEST BACK SEAT..If that car could talk it would tell FORUM stories... Took it Coast to Coast ( indirectly ) with just a single flat tire...
MOST RUGGED...1983 F-250 4x4 w/7.5L Auto , Dana front & rear axles ( 44 IFS & 71 ) and a Borg Warner transfer case.... It pulled a triple tandem axle , 40 foot , full boxed frame HEIL heavy equipment trailer out of a desert canyon on a mining trail after i slapped a pintle hitch on it.... I still own this truck..can't get myself to tag & register it but I also can't bring myself to sell it

You could get the new Scion Xb in black, and put XB side flutes, twin spoilers, magnetic badges, L-88 scoop, 8 spoke FWD Konig's and paint the satin lines on it with a rego plate of NTRCPTR...

...ducking for cover...I smell rotten fruit and the sweat of the frenzied mob...

My best car was an '89 Alfa Romeo 75 2.0L T-Spark. Just a big sedan with staight angles and not particular aerodynamic. 150hp. Transaxial drive. 1140Kg. And one time I got 16Km out of one litre. Not many cars of the same age and type were able to do that. And it was damn fast. But you probably don't have those in Australia.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.
