My definitive theory about THE JACKET !!!
Well,
I think Max could have replaced his former M.F.P vinyl jacket with a more resistent LEATHER jacket, adding the shoulder pad and doing all that stuff. Max wasn't no longer a bronze, but there was still a damn part of him "hooked" by that disappeared world (that's why he was wearing THE ASTORE POLICE BELT in MM3)... so he "attached" his old name-tag on the new jacket, this time riverting in it. Time by time, the signature on the name tag looked worn out, or something like that.
Same thing happened to the INTERCEPTOR. We all know that the one MM2 featured was a different LAST V8 (real world)... but in Max's world, our hero just re-arranged her for the outback... that's why the car seat interior is black and no more white

Uncle,
Firstly, it was the same car used in both movies apart from the double they wrecked and secondly, i would love to know where the "white interior" theory came from, the only part of the interior that wasn't black was the "bone" coloured headlining.

In real life, Max's jacket in MM1 was made of vinyl. In "reel" life, it was supposed to be leather.
Maybe the difference in jackets between MM1 and MM2 is just the result of a larger budget on the second film and a different costume designer and there is no other significance to it at all.
Just another opinion.

In the Commentary on the Special Edition DVD of MM1, they said in no uncertain terms that the outfit that Mel wore was the only real leather MFP Uniform used in the movie.
All the rest were vinyl.
So in the Movie word as well as in the Real World, the jacket & trousers Leather.
That said, it IS a possibility that Max replaced his own uniform jacket for one of a similar style (Likely another branch of the Main Force, I'd say)
It IS difficult to justfy the lack of rivet holes on the exposed shoulder where the jacket's original shoulder pads were.
And yes, the Headliner in the car was a light tan. the rest was Black.
(I went back & looked closer at the DVD after the last discussion on the car's interior.)

Goose's uniform was made out of real leather, all others were vinyl. I think the commentaries on the DVD are wrong. Goose's jacket is dull and thick . All other jackets are very thin and shiny. You should have seen it! Goose's jacket was also used for the close ups when Max is driving the BoB, because it's more detailed than the vinyl ones.
I could probably make it on my own, but I like you kids.

I can't imagine them giving the Goose character the real leather jacket when Mel was the star and Max was the main character; and I can't see any logical way they would get it wrong on the commentary.

We don't need another hero...we've got MAD MAX

Mel wasn't a star in 78. Goose's jacket is definitely made out of leather. THEY USED IT FOR THE MOTORCYCLE STUNTS! Would you like to be a stuntman in fake leather? Ouch!

Anyway, I think it's pretty clear that, in the MM1-MM2 lapse of time, during the Pox-Eclipse, Max DID replace the leather jacket with a new one, BUT attached on it his former name tag, this time riverted in. And that's because he's secretly fond of the Police corps in which once he soldiered on (See the Astore Police belt in MM3). In the BEYOND THUNDERDOME novelization (which doesn't count, but it's strongly based on Miller's script) it has been said that Max wears leather because it lasts forever, and as honour "remembrance" to his past Police uniform.
What's about the MM2 SCRIPT? The Dan Man site disappeared into the nothing, and I wasn't able to give a look on it, searching for an answer. I'm pretty sure there was a sequence in the prologue featuring Max who's burning his former "Police Uniform".
I bet Max just stole a normal leather jacket and re-arranged it (shoulder pad, missing arm, name tag application). His former leather jacket featured just ONE pocket, a slightly different design and, most of all, shoulder pads impossible to remove without damaging the leather tissue.
Believe me, I was the first one desiring it was the same jacket... but it's impossible. For the real world, for the "Reel" world too.

Here's a thought.
The lack of rivet holes is a flub?
EVERY movie has little details left out or forgotten.
Watching MM2RW over lunch the other day, I noticed a circular.. dirty spot on his left shoulder.
This COULD be an indication that the pad had been there, and either the holes are too small to see on Video & DVD or the costumers didn't feel it nessasary to include them.
(look close at the scene where Gyro has the Crossbow pointed at him.
Another idea is that the sleeve on the jacket was damaged when Bubba ran Max's arm over with his bike.
I'm thinking when it came time for more detailed first aid for Max's injuries in MM1, he sliced/tore the arm off of the jacket to make it easier to get to the wounds..
(Notice blood dripping from hand & sleeve on right side when he was preparing to pay Johnny back for burning up his friend..

Goddamn its meant to be the same damn jacket, how come we keep having the same arguments - sure it don't look like the same one in 'real life' it ain't the same one, but who cares, you ain't meant to notice or care about such a thing - if its meant to be a different jacket, why does it have a circular section on the shoulder where there has obviously been a pad stitched there, also what about the goddamn serial number? rivveted on or stitched on, its MAX's damn number its the same damn jacket.
