Howdy, Dan, how is it that a young guy of your age got into Mad Max? Most people your age are into like scooters and MTV. Well, I don't know about the rest of these guys, but I've got my shotgun shells accounted for and I can get planty more. Besides, most people who put together costumes don't carry actual shells because they can't, by law, carry a real shotgun. Since Max doesn't carry his shells in plain view like on a belt or something, costume builders don't bother.
Your other post says you want to make a costume. Well, I'm probably the only person on the current market that has made costume pieces. I'm not really into it anymore as some of the pieces were extremely difficult to make and took the thrill out of it real quick. Before you get into badges and all the accessories, though, you have to get a leather jacket and pants as well as a pair of motorcycle boots which even cheap, are pretty expensive. Being only 12, finding the above clothing articles in your size would be a hassle. It'd be best if you waited a few years until you've filled out to at least a size 40 chest and then jackets are much easier to come by. If you're still interested, I can write up something for you to look at later and you can have a better starting point. Think of this, if you put together a costume now, it's not going to fit in a year or two anyway.

I know what postcard you're thinking of. I've got one myself up on my wall. It's the original cover to the first movie. That the only place you'll ever see max wearing shinguards, though. That whole costume is really... Let's just say the artist took heaps of "artistic license" with it. Everthing is screwed up to a certain extent, even the car in the background!
The drawing looks like a cool version of Goose instead of Max. A few people have pointed out that Max does actually have a helmet like the drawing, but never wears it. I think it's on the window "sill" over the back seat at the very beginning of the movie, before he plays chicken with the Nightrider.

I went ahead and made a genuine sawed-off 2x4 shotgun. The part that sticks up above the holster looks Dinki-Di, but underneath, it blends down into the natural colored wood, ending in a day-glo orange tip. I used a 2x4, some dowels cut to about 4 inches in the appropriate 12 gauge, then cut aluminum plating for the brightwork and engraved it, and painted/stained the rest Hull Red. I also put a small chain screwed into the 2x4, then connected it to the inside of the holster so someone couldn't run with it. It looks Bonzer. It took about 6 hours to make it at work on lunches. Just an idea...
