"The Black Interceptor"

Post by Bronze Nurse »

I noticed something last night. I have, since the first time I saw Mad Max, thought of the black car- you know "the last of the V-8's"- as the black Interceptor. In the scene where Max is driving up to where Bubba winds up shooting him, if you listen carefully, you can hear the drone of the MFP dispatcher on his radio saying "unauthorized use of a black pursuit special by a Main Force Patrol officer" and "potential Code 3 Red Alert". Is it possible that all these years I was mistaken? Is this just the same category of vehicle as the one the Nightrider stole?

yeah, dude you should have a look at the MAD MAX FAQ's PART 2 VEHICLE LISTING, cause peter brings this up, the interceptor was infact max's yellow vehicle, all the yellow ones were the interceptors, all the black methane fueled ones were 'PURSUIT SPECIALS', not your average cop car like the yellows, they were bred for pure pursuit, while the others were patrol cars as well as chasers.

but somewhere along the line (i think cause of the mechanic in PART 2) the 'black on black' was referred to as the INTERCEPTOR, and its stuck. sounds cool though.

I told the guys at work I'm looking at an Aussie Falcon, and the first thing they ask is, "Are you going to make it into the Interceptor?" They've only seen the movies on TBS or USA and they know it only as the Interceptor, not the Black on Black - Pursuit Special.

Questions: The mechanic said it "Yeah, sucks nitro, Phase IV heads, 600 horse," etc... where is the switch for the nitro and how much does it carry, and how would that work with the "functional" blower setup? Why didn't Max have some left to outrun Wez? Do all of the Pursuit Specials run on methane - even Maxs' BoB like the Night Riders Holden?

I know, I know it's just a movie...but still.

as far as i'm led to believe, ALL the PURSUIT SPECIALS would run on methane, i mean you hear over the radio that nightriders did, and we know max's did, so i assume so.

Nitromethane, I just explained that to a friend last night :)

Interceptors - Top Police

Pursuits - Lower Police

Pursuit Specials - The Ducks Gut.

As for Max not outrunning Wez? I think its been brought up before...he wasn't running Nitro in Mad Max 2...he was running proably the highest grade water gas he could find. Nitromethane or any other high octane gas proably hadn't been produced since Mad Max 1.

It's been my opinion from the start that the Black on Black was a dual fueled vehicle. Running either Nitromethane or gasoline.

Question: If the Black "Pursuit Specials" were hotter cars than the Yellow Pursuit & Interceptor cars, WHY did Max's Yellow Interceptor overtake the Nightrider's Monaro Pursuit Special so easily?

My friends & I ranked the vehicles as such:

Standard Pursuit cars (Roop & Charlie)

Pursuit Specials (Nightrider's stolen Monaro)

Interceptor (Max's, Sarse & Scuttle's cars)

"Intercept Special" The Black on Black

I figure the terms are fairly logical that way.

"Pursuit Special" is probably just a blanket term for the black Upgraded cars

As for Wez running down the Black on black in Mungy's vehicle, Max's car was weighted down with close to half a ton of fuel.

This can make a LOT of difference even when a car is at full strength.

Foxtrot, Apparently (according to the novels, which I have not read) The Nightrider's Monaro was damaged from the chase, and that is why Max was able to catch him so easily.

Your run down on the pecking order is what I have always believed, but we are in the minority. The filmmakers didn't seem to know what to call it either. We have the MFP dispatcher calling it a Pursuit Special, and the Mechanic in MM2 a V/8 Interceptor.

This assumes of course that the "unauthorized use of a pursuit special" is actually referring to Max. His name is never used, and as the movie starts out with a stolen Pursuit Special, this may happen more often than the MFP would like.

Max's car is purpose built for Max out of spare parts, and is therefore not a standard build Pursuit Special. They may not have had a specific internal name for what it was, so the dispatcher just called it a Pursuit. It may have been the only Interceptor Special in existance. Even years later, the Mechanic recognizes it as something special: "The last of the V/8 Interceptors."

Like Top Fuel dragsters, the Pursuit Specials evidently run on nitromethane; there's no switch. You're thinking of nitrous oxide, which the Humungus' vehicle uses. Nitro is a fuel, nitrous is an additive that supports more oxygen during combustion. Because you have more oxygen, you can also inject more fuel, allowing the same engine to produce more power. Nitrous oxide is one of the simplest ways to provide a significant power boost to any gasoline engine.
