American Dub. Couple questions.

Post by ventured »

Two questions in reguards to the American audio dub of MM.

1. Is there a credit list of the voices used for the American dub?

2. Is there a concrete explanation as to why the dub? (Studio memo for example).

Having watched both version, I don't understand why the suits wanted to dub it. The accents are not that severe, and were in fact much heavier in Galipoli, which had it's North America release close to the same time (with in a year at least). The dub that was done was so awful, with such a dead/flat studio quality, that it really makes the situation worse than not having done the dub at all (a syndrom I call the Pipi Longstocking effect, for those that watched the old childhood TV series with it's bad dub).

I'd like to find out who did those voices too, that'd be interesting. Whoever did Mel's voice sounded just like him when he does an American accent. Whereas the ones most not like the original voices would probably be the Nightrider and Bubba.

I think they originally did the dub because there was this strange feeling that Americans would reject the movie if they heard aussie slang. Its ironic because I think if nothing else, it turned the original undubbed version into a cult classic (before the DVD came out) that made Americans seek it out more.

It had been reported before that even Mel was dubbed by an American actor, and was not Mel himself.

this is not an un american comment or anything, and i know i've been mistakened for that in the past. but i read once that americans back then would not accept anything unless it was american, there was a real arrogance (which kind of still exists now in some spects), to not let anything in that wasn't them, as far as they were concerned there was no world outside of the USA. so that was one of the reasons they dubbed , apparently you guys not only wouldn't understand us, but wouldn't accept us either.

I guess MM 1 really tanked at the American box office, at first. So they decided to do the dub. Gibson was allowed to supervise his own dub tho I still think it's awful. I haven't heard about any credits.

I agree it was a real butcher job. :(

I don't believe the film was ever released even as a test in the US with the Aussie voices. Why the did this has puzzled me for years...I'm a Yank and have no problem with the lingo, but I guess our Hollywood distributors who "know it all" felt it was too odd for us to understand. You need to realize that Hollywood and US Government both tend to treat us like we are too stupid to understand anything above a 5th grade level. :(

I'm surprised they didn't digitally re-master the cars to be LHD!

Dub really sucks i think. If many people from United States thinks it is worser than original "aussie" soudtrack.

I can imagine how australian "brogue" sounds from American, in Finland we have brogues also. I think it sounds like "savo" savonbrogue sounds to me in here north. Image

The suits know nothing about the audiences. They take the lowest common denominator and gear everything towards them. Find the dumbest inbred hillbilly and that's their target.
