HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) --[/b] Mel Gibson, who starred in the 1979 cult hit "Mad Max," is returning to the franchise for a fourth time, according to the entertainment trade paper Daily Variety.[/b]


He will be paid a salary approaching $25 million to star in "Fury Road" for original "Mad Max" director George Miller, who has been crafting the script for the last three years. Once again, Mad Max will roam the lawless, post-apocalpytic Australian outback.


The project is set up at Twentieth Century Fox. Studio insiders say the $104 million project will begin shooting in Australia next May as the targeted start date.


"This is the most exhaustively prepared movie I have ever been associated with," said Hutch Parker, president of production at Twentieth Century Fox. "The script is as ready as they come."


Miller, who directed and co-wrote the first three movies, regained the rights to the franchise from Warner Bros. in 1997. Warners, which released "Mad Max: The Road Warrior" in 1981 and "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" in 1985, gave him the rights after Miller agreed to detach himself from Warner Bros.' Jodie Foster-starrer "Contact" and allow Robert Zemeckis to helm.


Talks started in earnest about 10 months ago, shortly after Icon signed a two-year first-look production deal with 20th Century Fox, ending a long-term association with Paramount. Then, at the start of the summer, secret script readings began in the kitchen of Gibson's Icon Prods. partner, Bruce Davey.


Said Parker: "The script's been so tightly controlled, it would have been easier to get into the NSA (National Security Administration)."


The deal marks both the first picture that Miller will direct since the 1998 sequel to his 1995 script "Babe," and the first picture that he's ever directed for Fox, which has been courting him for years.


The trilogy of "Mad Max" pictures, for all their iconic value, amounted to a rather slender box office, grossing only $69 million in total domestically. That's partly because the 1979 original, released by Village Roadshow, Orion Pictures and AIP, was hardly seen Stateside at all. The franchise only grew significant with "Mad Max: The Road Warrior."


But, says Parker, "there are so few roles that define 'big screen action hero' and this is one of them. This is an event movie, and we know how to market event movies. It's Max the way you want to see him."

[div]Mel Gibson is to return as apocalyptic road warrior Mad Max in a role that could make him $25m (UKP16.3m), according to reports.


Gibson, who first starred in the role in 1979, has announced he will sign up for a fourth film, to go into production in Australia next May.


It will be called Fury Road, and has a budget of $104m (UKP67.9m), produced by 20th Century Fox, according to trade daily Variety.


The last Mad Max film was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which was in 1985. It also starred Tina Turner.


The Mad Max franchise made Gibson, until then a little-known Australian actor, an international star.

Mad Max is the tale of a law enforcement officer, "Mad" Max Rockatansky, who battles motorcycle gangs in a post-nuclear apocalypse Australia.


The following two films, The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome were big-budget Hollywood action movies.


The three Mad Max films grossed $69m (UKP46m) in the US.


The Fury Road script has been written by George Miller, who wrote and directed the first three films.


According to Variety, Miller has been working on the script for the last three years.

Yes this is good news however..


I am surprised that after Thunderdome, this announcement has caused so much interest.


I for one will not be expecting much, I will not be expecting MAX (who never showed up in Thunderdome) to show up this time either. But like the rest of you I sure hope he does.


But when I start reading about 104 million dollars as a budget and 25 million to Gibson. Well I keep thinking of Hollywood digital effects, fast edits, with a film that relies on crash bang effects, to showcase bigger stunts, to hell with a story, to hell with a script, to hell with the "feel" of the original cult film, because we now have money, and money, and money and now we can have a fast cut film, perhaps run at the pace of a music video with the script content of a Pop song to match, instead of a film at almost Sergio Leone pace, or at least the pace of the first two MAX films.


Mel Gibson however is a now a brilliant actor (see "We were soldiers") and director, ("Braveheart") Mel Gibson is at the peak of his craft, his "feel" for a film I do trust.

I only hope that he can see the sense in returning to the original two movies "feel", and would not have signed if it were other wise.


Sorry I can't get all carried away.. but I do agree the news is good, and the result could be what we want to see, at least there is a chance.


And they will get my money at least once.

After a really lousy day, this has cheered me up beyond all belief!!!!
