Mad Max I, crude and violent movie and classic

Post by Vekku »

(Sorry for some bad english, its not my mother tongue)

I have just thinking, was is Byron Kennydys or George Miller idea, to put some very crude scenes in Mad Max I?

Many people says, movies and tv are violent nowdays, they are not, if you compare those movies to Mad Max I. Violence is not main purpose in Max I, is belongs to story, and Max I would not be high-octaine cult classic, without Toecutters brutal acts, but couple scenes are almost too cruel, when Toecutter attacks to Jessie ja when Mudguts has Maxs kids in his arms, and when Max:s family dies.

But you "have" to look those scenes, then you undertstand why Max loses his control and goes after Toecutters gang. I think greatest scenes is that, when Max escapes Toecutters trap and goes goes after him, desolate Brian Mays music, when Max goes in car anger and revenge in his eyes. Chase is also great, jet-effect for blower, jet like sound, is also fine insight for crew. I think blower doesnt make voice like that.

Iam i only, who had difficult to watch those scenes, when Maxs family was attacked? i have bit competing with film, iam a fan, but same time those scenes are too violent to watch.

The only problem I have with the movie (his greatest FLAW) is that everything (storyline, characters, pacing, atmosphere) is built up on the final revenge sequence, supposed to be the movie's greatest action set-piece... but the final revenge sequence HERE is TOO MUCH BRIEF. I mean, it's a great flaw. The end is not satisfying in my book!

I agree, the end of MM1 was a little anticlimactic. But the last bit of vengeance dealt to Johnny The Boy was sweet & entertaining.

Maybe the revenge was supposed to be anticlimactic. Perhaps part of the message was that revenge is ultimately unsatisfying.

Being a Sicilian Scorpio, I can't believe I'm saying this...

One of my favorite sayings:

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold. But then again so is ice cream, and you know how good that tastes!

mad max 1 is rated r yet the violence in it is nothing compared to modern films. Gladiator for instance has the hero's wife and child also run over by horses then burnt and you SEE the bodies. Miller had the opportunity to be far more graphic, ie showing goose's body, showing what happened between the chevy being stopped and the 'turkey' having no pants on. The violence is implied but in an age where gory violence is all around it hardly rates.

Even in Star Wars Luke's aunt and uncle are killed and in the sequel he loses a hand and thats PG

Uncle I have to disagree although I know it will stir you up. "his greatest flaw" has to be MM3

Ehm... I hate to disappoint you, but all I know is that MM3 gets TWO climax points, MM1 gets no one. Still, MM is a very very good movie, hugely inferior to the sequels but still good in my book. I actually love it.

Just the truth, nothing but the truth from a movie expert like me.

That's a very good point about vengeance, Mitch. It never can erase the deeds done and falls short of total satisfaction. The end of MM1 conveys that message.

Revenge doesnt make Max any "happier", he has strange sad look in his eyes, when he drives away from Johnny The Boy. I agree, revenge solves nothing, that was that idea of ending.

I think, still Mel Gibsons best movie, Mel gets that crazy and mean look in his eys and he has also lots of carisma.

What makes the movie work is that most of the violence was implied.

When Jessie and Sproggo were killed Miller skillfully show the result, not the act. The minds eye can fill in these visual blanks with the most horrifying thoughts. The genious here are the "blanks"in the film. This theactrical tactic is what makes the movie connect with so many veiwers. One can put their worst thoughts into the message being displayed.

After Jessie and Sprog are hurt, Miller is briliant to only show the scene from a distance.

This makes the veiwer want to watch it even more and strain to see what is happening.

Beautiful work.
