mad max 2 scene where car flies into ditch

in the scene in mad max 2 where the car fly into the ditch .. the ute with the dummy in the back .. it shows the side of the refinery camp with just a couple of stands of barbed wire .. i always wondered why the baddies just didn't go in that way !

Ferocious chickens would have pecked them to death.
Basically I think the ditch was meant to be big / deep enough that it'd be easy to spot and pick off enemies in it, especially with no cover to sneak up; the camp always lit up at night and always had lookouts looking out
