Modern Budget Replica

Post by Samuel »

Hello everyone!

I'm a teenager and I've been thinking about creating a replica interceptor, but I've already got one old project that my father and I are doing together. I'd rather not have two huge projects going on. However, I'm looking to buy myself a daily driver that I can use, not a classic. I was thinking about turning that newer daily driver into an interceptor replica on a budget, and I was wondering what kind of car you guys thought might look the best for it. I know it won't be anywhere near perfect or anything like that, it's just meant to be a sort of tribute car that I could drive everyday.

I've got a few requirements for it that kind of limit what I could buy. First, it needs to be front wheel drive. I live pretty north, in Iowa, where I need to drive during the winter. Rear wheel drive really isn't the best for that, so it needs to be front wheel drive, so I can drive it all year round. Second, it needs to have airbags. My parents won't let me drive anything without them, sadly. Honestly, that's about it, I can customize the rest of it myself.

There are a couple I've been looking at, like these cars that are relatively close to me.

It's a 1992 Dodge Daytona, which is FWD and has airbags. The bodylines seem like they might be close enough, the front looks somewhat similar, and for a modern car, it looks about as close to a 70s muscle car as I can find. What do you guys think?

If you guys have any ideas of a car I could buy that might make a good tribute car, I'd love to know. Thanks! :D

Nice choice, I've had quite a few L and G body Dodges :) If you can get one with the 2.2 garrett turbo it's the pick of the bunch, though I think all of the later ones like you've pictured had the smaller Mitsumi turbo (still ok, just not as tuneable). They're comfy for long trips etc, though not that great in the snow because of the long overhang at the front getting hooked up on stuff. Definitely definitely get one with a manual transmission.

With a little creative hammering you might be able to persuade an '84 - '86 nose onto one, too, which would look a lot more Interceptor-like ;)

If you do get one then check out turbo-mopar.com for a bunch of helpful advice (even if you end up getting a non-turbo one) ... TBH when I had my '84 Daytona Turbo I was more tempted to make it look like a budget DeLorean though, lol

Rather than trying to find the right non-falcon-car to make an Interceptor rep, how about getting the car you want/need and modifying so it's MFP inspired?

That front piece on the Datona does have nice similarities to the Interceptor. I like it.
But, as MWFV8 said, you can make anything you like into a Mad Max "inspired" car. If I can attach a pic here is my old 75 Chevy Monte Carlo. And in my signature is my 2007 Dodge Charger

my signature isn't working, so I will attempt to put a smaller picture on my Charger

The daytona is a good daily tribute, but i'd only get one if you like DODGE. if you're a chev guy, get something more to your taste. so long as it's black (or yellow/red/blue) it doesn't matter too much.
If fury road is more your style, a bit of black paint and a few accessories will make any car ready for the apocalypse

i would like to think that even if it were after an apocalypse, and i had the know how and access to tools and materials to armor up my vehicle that since im already there, i would center all my armor on the windows. at that point one has all the time in the world to do it.

that pipe/fence net looking armor on the driver side window is hard to look at.
