I've watched the movie over and over again, and I can't help but notice the resemblance between one of the guys begging for water and the Gyro Captain..

I loved all the little nods to earlier films, from the music box to eyes bulging out of people's heads before they got run over.
If you want to take Fury Road as a continuation of the story it could mean that Immortan Joe sacked the great Northern Tribe.

The eyes bulging shot was taken directly from Toecutter's death scene:

To me the only way Fury Road makes sense as a continuation is if this world takes place in an alternate timeline from Road Warrior. After Max delivered the tanker truck and Pappagallo gives back his fully loaded Interceptor he drives off and is never taken out by Wez. He manages to outrun the Humongous vehicle and disappears back into the wasteland with his car. The movie ends there and things can go either way with the tribe. Max continues living on the road for years, Beyond Thunderdome never happens, and eventually his luck runs out at the beginning of Fury Road where he loses the Interceptor once and for all.

^Nice theory. That would fit in very well with the ghosts saying things like "You let us die", "You promised to help us", "Stop running" etc and Max'x behavior. We see Max try to drive off with the War Rig leaving Furiosa and the Wives behind to their horrible fate.
I got the idea that Max was the leader of a group of survivors who were constantly being picked off by raiders/bandits. Each time Max would blame himself more and more until he went insane and fled into the desert or fled mid attack. During all that time the electrical storms had covered the cities & roads in sand and dried up the oceans & rivers which would only drive him more and more insane.
I hope a version with audio commentary comes out soon so George can drop some more hints or even explain some more of the back story of this Max.
