A piece of history...

When Fury Road went into pre-production and they started assembling parts for cars, Scott Smith received a call to supply parts to build a set of new Mad Max Interceptors. At the time I helped him put together some instructional material on how to fit the various bits and pieces to the cars (let's be serious, he instructed, I just filmed it), and of course I couldn't resist taking my picture amongst all the bits and pieces - would be cool to be able to post it in a couple of years when the film came out I thought.

The picture below was taken on February 8th, 2003. These were all the parts Scott supplied for the Interceptor as originally intended in the film at that time - fibreglass, blower assemblies, etc. He did supply some subsequent materials, and the cars also evolved more than a little from what was originally conceived to what ended up on screen more than 10 years later. When you think about how long they worked on this, it really is a testament to everyone involved in the production that they kept pursuing it, and kept evolving everything to be cutting edge. The iPhone, YouTube, Facebook, none of that existed back when this picture was taken. I can't imagine the work that must have gone on behind the scenes over the years to keep this film going, and to keep evolving everything to be in line with the latest technologies as they emerged. Still in awe of the end product they produced, the vehicles in the film are insane, and it was great to see the Interceptor brought back in to be part of it.

Awesome stuff, it's crazy how long the road for Mad Max 4 was.

It has been a long road for sure and it's great to see some new stuff popping up from so long ago.

Do you know if they still built any of the Interceptors back then to the original intentions before they added more mods for the movie that we now have or was all the stuff put into storage somewhere until they knew they would actually be filming and would need them cars?

I'm always gonna wonder what may have been if things had happened back then.

I'm assuming that was someone contracted to build cars the first time they were in Namibia. I was always surprised they posted as much info as they did, this was back before anything about the Interceptor inclusion was officially announced.

The press junket car from 2009 was also built with the same parts, and seems likely it might have been the same car. I would assume that car was ultimately evolved to what is seen in the film - because they built multiples using identical parts, it's difficult for me to know which is which, or exactly how many got built. There were enough parts originally supplied to build 4 cars, but like I said, there was a lot of evolution of the intervening years. My understanding is that the Razor Cola car was originally going to be black also, and the chrome idea came in somewhere later on.

So they did put something together even if it was just the one car perhaps. Never would have thought they had it built OS, just pictured these cars were all built locally for some reason. Wonder if someone got in a lil bit of trouble for letting that pic out back then, especially as you said nothing about it being used in the film had been officially spoken.. I do remember seeing the one in 09 when they announced it on the news that they would be filming a new Mad Max. That really did get me excited about things, both the announcement itself and seeing the Interceptor again.

I think i'm looking forward to the bluray for the extras it may hold just as much as the movie. The film being made with so much practical stuff happening should make for a great viewing. It'll be really awesome if they do a docco or something of the whole journey with all it's bumps of what went down to get to where they ended up finally. Might be hoping for too much there but then...

Well done to peter and scott for both being involved for such a long time and honouring any secrecy agreements, some people have been making all sorts of claims and bragging for a couple of years now but hey fraudsters will always be fraudsters and get caught out in the end....
