BoB 83/84?

Post by PhilC »

Wanted to share a memory of part of what got me hooked on Mad Max besides the films.

Can't remember the year but it must have been 83/84 i think as to get to the destination my mum had to drive me and my friends, i didn't have a license. My friends who knew of this destination were older but their only transport was a two wheeled machine so the four of us needed a car so mum took us. We were on our way to see BoB and i couldn't wait. This was one of them days that you can't believe will ever happen. We roll up at wreckers yard at Upper Sturt, it was a yard on a corner block. The owner lived in a house across the road and after chatting and asking if we can see the car from Mad Max he tells us to meet him across the the road at the yard but not go in he'll bring Bob out for us. This was all just mind blowing for a 15 year old that i was. So he opens the gate and we wait out the side, then we hear the rumble of that V8 coming from somewhere in that yard..

The owner drove the Pursuit Special out and allowed us to take pictures. It was in fantastic condition the only real blemish was the blower hat had caved in just a bit on top. Wow this was the actual car from Mad Max. Taking a line from Fury Road, oh what day, what a lovely day.. :) I seen what became of the car after it was purchased and personally i would have preferred it to have remained as it was when i seen it rather than what was done to it. Fix the hat sure but the rest was in pretty good nick still really.

It's not much of a story and i don't know a real lot but i can post some more pic's from the day. I didn't take these photos but somehow i ended up with negatives. I only had one of those instant polaroid camera and my photos were all pretty crap really. Thank god one of us had a half decent camera on the day. :)

The owner never popped the hood for us so didn't get to see under the bonnet. I can say though my arse has been where Mel Gibson's arse has been..

So cool, and yeah that must have been awesome as a kid or young teen or whatever you were.

How did you know where to find it? Must have been much more difficult back before you could hop online and search, or was it common knowledge around there, or...?

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

This is something special, man!

The only other pics i've ever seen of the BoB at this stage of it's life is the ones on Pete's History of the Interceptor section.

Did you happen to look in the back seat area?
I always wondered if the junk was left in there, or just completely cleaned out, or what???

In some RW production stills, original BOB had a two tone paintjob from first MM, but on this photos car looking very glossy, like the double one fairmont.

Simply WOW, great to see old pics of the original beast appear after all these years!

The car was rubbed back a bit to get rid of the gloss, you can still see the pinstriping in the film in a lot of closeups.

Glad you guys like seeing Bob also. Seeing BoB in this condition which looks like it was basically how things were after filming bar a bit of a clean up was really amazing. I know i didn't have a license so would have been around 15 at the time. To answer a few of the questions asked. I never knew of BoB's whereabouts but a couple of people i knew did so i discovered. Those guys introduced me to the movies in the first place which got me started with my enjoyment of the Max films. It was before Thunderdome so it was just the original and MM2.. To a 15 year old it was simply mind blowing. Anyway as it turns out these two guys knew where BoB was but i'm not really sure it was common knowledge or not though.

From memory the car was cleaned out, there was nothing in there. The only things i recall being in there were some items attached to the crash pad on the passenger side. Dog's seat was still on the door but it was just the seat. Gearstick knob and blower switch were not there but the big fuel gauge was.

This is the real BoB as far as i'm aware. I can't really comment on the pin stripping that was on it originally. It's not something i was even aware of back then to try and look for, it was simply a thrill to be seeing BoB. That i got to hear it and see it being driven out just made it that much better. I even had the opportunity to sit in it and have me picture taken, it couldn't get any better bar taking us for a strap maybe.

I'll go through me picks and post up a few more to enjoy. My photos are pretty old and i only scanned em at the start of the year so a lot a pretty average..
