“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on 'Fury Road'], and writing all the backstories, they just expanded,” Miller explained on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith about the genesis of the followup films. And while he hasn't gotten around to storyboarding them — give the guy a break, he only finished 'Fury Road' a few of weeks before it opened around the world — he says the next entry is titled, “Mad Max: The Wasteland.”
Haven't listened to it yet, but supposedly in this podcast Miller explains that Mad Max: Furiosa is a standalone prequel film, separate from the 2 sequels he's also been developing, I'm now guessing one of which is called Mad Max: The Wasteland.
Jesus??!! You mean we could be getting THREE more films??!!
Have to say FR will have to do big box office to get these greenlit? If Hardy is signed on for 3 more then I guess he'll be in all 3 but Theron in just the prequel? Presumably Immortan Joe/People eater/Bullet farmer may be in the Furiosa film?
As good as Theron was, I don't want her back in the sequels unless they feature the citadel but I would like to see more of The Buzzards...
I think it's more a matter of giving himself and the studio options on how to proceed, either with a Furiosa prequel or Max sequel. Judging from how Theron sounded in a couple of interviews, it didn't seem to me like she wanted to return to the franchise.
Theron must be revelling in all the great reviews and positivity over her performance in Fury Road though, even though it was a difficult shoot, something truly amazing came out of it that she was a great part of. She seems to like Miller a lot and her and Hardy seem to have put any grievances behind them.
That said I would prefer a new Max story as he ventures out into the wasteland and new discoveries.
So, what I gather from the podcast interview and from other sources is that Mad Max: The Wasteland would be the follow up sequel to Fury Road and already has a completed script. While Fury Road takes place over the course of 3 days, The Wasteland takes place over the course of about a year. A potential third movie is only in novella form at the moment and that movie would take place over the course of several years. Furiosa is being developed as a film that would not involve Max, and it doesn't sound like there's a script for this movie either. My guess is that the Mad Max sequels would not involve Furiosa.
