Favourite Mad Max/Road Warrior ripoffs/retreads/homages

Post by scfc68 »

I think we all know them......

Whether they be from the 80s Italian exploitation cinema; the likes of Bronx Warriors, New Barbarians, Endgame or bang up to date from Neil Marshall's Doomsday to mega budgets like Terminator Salvation, let's have any recommendations or nods to any lesser known hidden gems out there - especially as so many are uploaded in full on YouTube :D

I'd really like to highlight The Atlantis Interceptors from 1983 aka The Raiders Of Atlantis aka Atlantis Inferno. This can be found in full on Youtube and also several trailers are on Youtube to give a flavour. It's also on Amazon UK on R2 DVD as Atlantis Inferno.

Well worth a watch, way more action than Thunderdome and to be honest has more of a Road Warrior feel to boot!

This from Wikipedia;

"The Atlantis Interceptors (also known as Raiders of Atlantis and Atlantis Inferno; original title I predatori di Atlantide) is a 1983 Italian science fiction film starring Christopher Connelly and directed by Ruggero Deodato.

The film was heavily influenced by George Miller's 1979 vision of outback hell, Mad Max, and its sequel, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, and John Carpenter's dystopian view of a future New York, Escape From New York (1980) and was only one of seemingly countless imitations, such as Bronx Warriors, Rome, The New Gladiators, and The New Barbarians. Very much action-oriented, the films often featured heavy doses of violence and brutality.

Two Vietnam-vets and several scientists face an extraordinary battle for survival against descendants of Atlantis' original race, when the Lost Continent emerges in the Caribbean following radioactive leakage from a sunken Russian nuclear submarine. Calling themselves "Interceptors", the murderous Atlanteans set about reclaiming the world by killing everyone and destroying everything in sight. It is up to Mike, Washington and Dr. Cathy Rollins to uncover the secret behind their existence and use it against them in order to stop the interceptors' apocalyptic rampage.

The Atlantis Interceptors, aka, Raiders of Atlantis, was released in 1982/83 in the UK on videotape, but is still unavailable on DVD as a mainstream release. The version available in a recent Grindhouse collection in the US is poorly transferred from VHS and in full screen"

Have to say for once, Wikipedia is pretty spot on. It was that VHS I first saw back in 1983 and it made a lasting impression. I don't know how good the Amazon UK DVD is but its well worth the investigation, folks.

Any one got any good 'uns??

There's a movie called Land of Doom that I like.
Also Exterminators of the Year 3000.

Thanks for reminding me on that one :D

Another one I can recall was 2019 After The fall Of New York; kind of more like Escape From New York but pretty good

Waterworld; unfairly maligned. The opening attack scene on the floating atoll/compound stands alongside anything. The gills rankle me big time but overall I enjoyed it.

The Postman wasn't that bad either.

I know its not scifi but the car chase and biker gang subplots in Stallone's Cobra (1986) are very Road Warrior in feel. Good movie too and deserved a sequel

I cant help thinking George Miller must have seen Race With The Devil from 1975 prior to making Max, there's an end chase scene that's VERY similar to MM2's final chase. Great action setpiece and a pretty good horror/action thriller to boot. Well due a remake!

Seen that one years ago. Good movie indeed. Only not a good ending like you usually expect.
A remake of this sort of movies is always a bit difficult. If you want to do a story of about 30 years ago in the present day, you have the problem of modern technology. Back then the people where more isolated by the lack of mobile phones and the internet. That's what you see in some modern films these days, that the cellphones suddenly don't work for now apparent reason. Otherwise the story would not get that interesting ;)
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

Great movie. Such a shame a lot of the set burnt down.
