I am "Only"36,look 56 feel26..

I Remember when MM1 was first at the Drive-Inn as a truck would drive around Sunshine,Western Melbourne suburb not far from where the movie was filmed, with a smashed up car on the back and banners screaming"Mad Max did this!!"

Cherry Lane,Telephone box and caravan scene,is still there and everytime I drive down it I feel like asking if it isnt 100% SNAFU,Nothing a week in the tropics wouldn't fix.

Real name: Jon Gibbs

I am one of the younger one's here, being 19 years old. I first saw parts of MM1 while being around 8-9 years old and walking into my parents room while my dad was watching the movie. All I saw then was a guy in a yellow car point a gun out the window at a guy in a black car, and the guy in the black car hit his brakes. Then I was infomred that I was too young to see the movie, but it stuck in my mind. As I watched it later, I got hooked and more hooked (on the first movie). The others are ok. But the first one rules!!

Other stuff I've done is to run the Mad Max Webring, and the Mad Max Replica Stats page:

http://www.geocities.com/madmaxreplicas

And I've helped out Gordon and Grant with their Mad Max Parts and Cars page:

I also own 4 Dodge Chargers, two with big blocks.

And I would like to correct some information on Bullitt, McQueen was YANKED from the driving, as he screwed up too much, and couldn't drive. Bill Hickman (who drove the awesome triple black '68 Charger R/T 440 4 speed) was the real stunt driver here.

Also, to clear up any misconceptions about the Stain being fast when compared to the Charger, here is a quote from Max B., the guy who worked on and built both the Charger and the Stain, for the movie.

"I'll tell you this," said Max Balchowsky, "I was really impressed with the Mustang after I got done with it. I didn't think it'd make that much difference beefing it up. Later, we took both cars out and went playing around with them over by Griffith Park (near Los Angeles). The Dodge, which was practically stock, just left the Mustang like you wouldn't believe." Ron Riner has similar recollections. "The Charger ran rings around the Mustang. We trimmed the tires down (on the Charger), we practically made them down to bicycle tires to try and handicap Hickman, and Bill just run them."

That is from a motor trend article about the film that is here:

heh Jon, thanks for those links, there are some great replicas out there. Must get a copy of that video. Geez if I was more of a car nut I would try and get the XB GT across the road from my place,m it just sits in the backyard now, complete running 302 in good nick, I should really just hassle old mate neighbour until he buckles !!! It would make a great base for a replica, even though I am a GM fan from way back, those old Clevo's have a way better exhaust note, the 308's sound like you are farting in a bath !!!

I'm sorry Pursuit Special...just to disagree (not be disagreeable!Image) I heard that the director WANTED to pull McQueen from the stunts, especially after the stunt where he misses the turn and then has to launch into reverse real fast and catch back up, BUT Mcqueen threatened to quit the film if he was pulled and therefore got to finish the stunts. I learned this in a film class at Univ. North Texas back in '85 where we studied this "Chase Sequence" in great detail, even had one of the film crew that worked the scene come and talk. But hey, I could be wrong.

As to the differnece of the Charger and the 'Stang, yeah I had already heard that the 'Stang was highly underpowered in comparison to the Dodge. Afterall, a 390c.i.4 bbl. can't compete with a 440 six pack no matter what you do short of a pumping air thru forced induction,be it turbo or supercharger.

Cheers,

I'm 24 TODAY!!! and I'm a final year cybernetics student. :-)

I first saw all three max films in the same weekend when I was about 11 or 12, on a dodgy quality VHS pirate version, with the into to MM2 placed in front of the beginning of MM1!!!!!!
