I'll add yet another take to this never-ending thread.

As an American car junkie, I saw MM1 when I was about 15 or 16. I was mesmerized, and happily puzzled by the cars (look like Fords, sound like Fords, but the steering wheel is on the wrong damn side!?). The action, photography, story all appealed to the pubescent teen. As an adult, I now appreciate the story and technical aspects more, and appreciate the film at greater length knowing how it came to be created.

Road Warrior aka MM2 I saw when it was released in the USA also, enjoyed it, thought it had a (arguably) better story than MM1 but gained a bit with the larger budget. Not quite as cool car-wise (what was with some of those vehicles?) but a worthy sequel for sure.

I only recently saw MM3. When it was released I knew, just knew it had become something different. I was right. Though it is a good story I'd offer that it has gone a bit too far, is a bit too cartoonish in it's presentation and the end chase sequence not markedly different than MM2. By now it is assumed all MM films will end with a head-on collison. Image

So, my summary as a Yank: MM1 is for car guys, MM2 is for action guys, MM3 is for science fiction guys. The reason we probably can't agree on all 3 is they appeal to different personalities.

BTW, I think the Aussie flavor of the films is essential, and probably the lack of it in MM3 is a detriment. On behalf of USA fans, I apologize for Tina Turner's existence. Image

ddavidv,

I have to modify your summary to make it work for me:

MM1 is for bike guys and car guys who like their cars to be shiny and pretty.

MM2 is for car guys who like scary, dirty, rusty, jagged edged battle vehicles.

MM3 is for Uncle Entity.

Good points....

I remember 1985, and the entire video pop world exploding. Tina Turner was the hottest woman in show business at the time and Mel was predicted to burn out. You couldn't move without hearing one of her songs on the radio or MTV. At the time radio was much more repetitive and they played the theme song too much. I was a rabid fan and I even got my fill. Mel's career was shakey at the time. He was going through his dependancy stage. I had such high hopes for him though. He turned out the be the greatest actor of our time.

If you would ever see Tina in concert you wouldn't feel the need to apologize.

I have spoken.................

MM1 and MM2 are timeless.

Well maybe MM1 is a bit 70s by the clothes and cars but other than that there's no 70s culture references and the movies is still fresh and original even today. MM2 is just a classic that can never be bettered.

Notice how in the first two movies, they open with ominous, threatening music by the great Brian May; while MM3 opens with a Tina Turner song!!! This dates the film immediately back to the 80s and now poor Thunderdome is stuck in a time warp. Horrible way to introduce a movie, that.

Hopefully Fury Road won't become an attempt to revive the career of Tina Turner (not to mention Robert Downer Jnr).

i finally watched it. It was about what i expected. maybe a little better than what i expected. it was pretty strange, and at times, it was somewhat corny and unrealistic, but i liked it nonetheless. as i thought would be the case, it is my third favorite of the three. i think i will end up buying it sometime soon. I wish there had been more vehicle sequences, but i guess (like javascript:openWin('pop_up_profile.asp?profile=314','profile','toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,width=475,height=340') said) thats why i like the first one the most, because of the cars, mainly the interceptor of course. I didnt think it was tooo bad that tina turner was in the movie but i dont like that her song is used. like javascript:openWin('pop_up_profile.asp?profile=310','profile','toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,width=475,height=340') said, it should have been a composed piece. oh well. i really hope fury road is good.

NITRO, your absolutely right, sometimes i'm looking for a point to bring up and a way to express what i mean but i just can't get it out.

well you did it for me THUNDERDOME is labeled 80's whether it wants to be or not, but the other two could be released now, and the only thing giving away part 1's time is the fashion, and only of a couple of characters, i see the occasional biker round here dressed in skins, and looking like the TOECUTTER.

Guys,

First of all, "ONE OF LIVING" is a metallic, desperate song --- so much suitable with the Mad Max's spirit. Yeah, THUNDERDOME is an '80ies classic flick ...so what's the problem? IT's an '80ies movie by all means, born in a decade where movie used to KICK ASS. Be proud.

TINA is fantastic in the movie. She won the NAACP award as best actress in 1985. I agree. She's fantastic.

THUNDERDOME is not a movie for sci-fi fans or action fans or any other type of fan. I don't wanna LABELS here. LABELS are no longer. THUNDERDOME is a movie for DREAMER who LOVE TO DREAM ADVENTURES. When I see THunderdome, I would belong to. To be part of that world --- that micro-universe.

Probably, THUNDERDOME was ahead of its own time, and still IS. I hope they will give the credit it deserves in 2025 or so...

Nirvancol, say us more... please! We're curious...

MEL gave an incredible, wonderful performance, anyway.

well, i liked the whole look of the movie, and the sets and locations and all. the one part that was the most unrealistic though, was when ironbar survived that explosion. and then he flew off of the train-truck off that bridge. then hes back later. but whatever. it was just very different from the first two movies; i still liked it though. i dont know what else to say about it at the moment.

I'm a little puzzled why some of you think MM1 is a "70's" flick in looks. The only thing that makes it 70's (to me) is the cars...by today's standards they are a bit dated, what with the "pleather" seats and plastic, ugly steering wheels. And maybe that mural on the Sandman van isn't helping. Costumes? No, I think the leather look endures. Bikers still dress like that here in the USA. Other than the obvious vehicle dating I don't see where the movie really dates itself, other than we've crept closer to the 'anarchie' the film depicts. Stick a five year old Falcon and Mondeo in the movie with zoomie pipes and you've got the same flick. Image
