I bought an SKS yesterday. What is a good price for one with a scope and one of those big banana clips? I want to know if I got a good deal or not.

If it's empty, and I cock it, isn't the slider part supposed to snap forward again? They told me no, because it was empty.

How would you say it's different from an AK-47, and what makes it better/worse than an AK-47?

Thanks.

They sold those with a side of fries in Australia before Port Authur...and were as cheap as chips.....not that they were a bad gun...they were flogging them off from ex-Soviet Satellite States and China.

SKS's have no full auto ability...they're fed from a fixed mag...so no 30round banana clips for you. If yours has a spike bayonet it'll be a Chinese version...otherwise look for Slovak markings. They're allegedly more accurate than the AK due to having tighter tolerances (i.e. fully auto requires a little more slop in the action to be reliable).

The only real problem I had was the ex-military/surplus ammo. They use corrosive primers...they're water (not oil) soluable..so you have to plug your barrel and pour boiling, soapy water down the bore to dissolve the salts before you do any real bore cleaning. Enjoy your shooting..there's many of us who can't anymore!!!!

First time building a Holster, yes.

The drop from my belt puts the butt of the gun about 2 inches higher than my wrist with my arm held straight down at my side.

I measured VERY Carefully, several times before cutting anything.. then went back and fixed it so it hung where I wanted it after I screwed it up & cut wrong. [:p]

The gun doesn't fall out when upside down even without the hammer loop (Which will come a bit later) and draws smoothly without the holster moving much at all when the leg tie down is tied.

It works better than it Looks.

Oh.. Clicky..

ydx7, is your SKS one of those imported that could use AK magazines or does it use some sort of replacement for the standard 10 round magazine. I had one of the chinese SKS's that could use the AK mag and found it to be pretty reliable, but the extended mags ment to replace the original 10 rd. fixed mag seem to spotty reputation as far as being reliable. Check this site out for more info. http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/index.asp

Don't bother messing with the high-capacity magazines for the SKS, most are junk. If you want a high-cap rifle in that caliber, just save up a bit more and buy an AK. The SKS was designed with it's 10rd capacity and thats where it works the best. The Chinese did have a 20 round mag that was supposed to install in place of the 10 rounder but you take your chances with them. Some would fit with no problems and others may require hand-fitting. I've never seen a SKS jam with its stock capacity magazine.

The slider thing, the bolt carrier, is supposed to stay back when the rifle is empty. This is to tell the shooter it is time to reload. To close the carrier on an empty chamber, push down on the magazine follower and pull back on the bolt knob slightly. You will hear a little click which is the hold-open device dropping. Slowly ease the bolt forward until it is about halfway shut and then remove your thumb and let it close all the way. Be careful not to let it slam shut on your thumb.

How do the two differ, the SKS and the AK? Well one was designed as a semi-auto rifle and the other as a select-fire carbine. The SKS is a Simonov design and the AK a Kalashnikov. The only things they really share is gas operation, the cartridge and the basic trigger mechanism design, and the trigger design was borrowed from the M-1 Garand. The locking methods are totally different. Accuracy wise the SKS has an edge but only to the limitations of the cartridge. The 7.62x39mm round was not designed for accurate competition type shooting, but rather high-volumn assault fire. But the SKS is generally the more accurate of the two. The milled steel reciever versions of the AK run a close second and the stamped-steel versions a distant third. If you find a stamped 47 that will hold 4-5inch groups at 100meters you'd better hang on to it, you've found a rare one. If you want a accurate AK-type rifle, go for the AKS-74 version in either 5.56NATO or the Russian 5.45x39mm. My Bulgarian 74's in 5.45 are every bit as flat shooting as my AR-15. I rarely shoot the 7.62 rifles any more. I'm really impressed with the 5.45 round and of course the Kalshnikov design just keeps running through dirt and conditions that will shut down the AR.

It is a Chinese version with the built-in spike. I can't get it to fold out fully because it has what appears to be a flash suppressor on the end of the muzzle.

The scope is a NcStar 4x30.

I'd still like to know how much this is worth, considering the extra goodies(bana clip, flash supressor, scope).

I'll do the tell now. I was leaving work early to visit pawn and thrift stores, mostly to look for musical equipment. I asked this one coworker if one pawn shop was still in business. She told me about another pawn shop that she likes, and we started talking about guns. She said she bought an SKS for $100 due to it being in bad cosmetic condition. We both had a brain fart in thinking the main difference from the AK was that the SKS was 5.56mm. Well, I go driving around looking for that pawn shop, and come upon another one. I go inside. The counters in front of the gun area were blocked off, but I could see something with a banana clip. I ask them what it is, and what caliber. They say it's a 7.62 SKS. Due to earlier in the day, I thought maybe this was a mislabelled AK. Both guns look a lot alike to somebody that isn't a gun person. I also forgot that a AK has a pistol grip. Well as you know, I bought it. If it wasn't for the clip, I wouldn't have given it a secold glance.

OK, pet-peeve time. It's not a clip, it's a magazine. Clips are used to load a magazine. They are not the same thing.

OK, rant over. Image

It's hard to say how much the gun you bought is worth with out being able to see it of having more info about it. The surplus rifle site can give you a general idea of what the gun it self is worth without the add-ons. There is another comapany that sells accesories and ammo and such, called Cheaper Than Dirt. Their online catalogue can probably give you an idea what the accessories cost. I would figure if you spent less than a couple of hundred dollars you got a pretty good deal.
