Ah, I'm a crabby old man now, but I think Punk IS Dead, the Exploited notwithstanding... The mere fact of its popularity and mass merchandising in the malls indicates to me that its not what it was originally. We used to have to make our own band t-shirts, and the rips in our jeans we came by honestly. Now kids go to the mall for the latest retro punk fashions, including pre-ripped and faded jeans and band logo shirts with nice official looking copyright info printed as part of the graphic. Something wrong with a Sex Pistols shirt (c)2003.

And the new music might as well be tribute bands or do covers of the old stuff. It's just not cutting edge anymore, nor does it have the heart of rebellion against injustice and society in general that the old stuff used to. Now it's by the numbers, I'm a spoiled suburban brat playing rebel B.S.

When you get the Buzzcocks in a Toyota commercial, Iggy Pop in a Carnival cruise ship commercial, and the Ramones even, then I think that the heart of punk is dead.

Somebody help an old man off this soapbox...

I agree with what your saying MITCH, but the bands your getting at, i don't even give the satisfaction, of calling them punk, any band that calls themselves punk, are not punk.

TRENT REZNOR never called his music INDUSTRIAL, the press did, he hates the term. JOHNNY ROTTON and IGGY POP, will not have the term punk spoken in their presence, they detest it.

Anyone into punk, or knows punks, who hasn't seen it, needs to go buy or rent SLC Punk.

Set in Salt Lake City in the mid 80's this film got a lot of punk culture exactly right. I especially liked the "house" they lived in. Totally reminded me of the "punker bunker" my punk friends lived in. Check it out!

mitch,

i wasnt around when punk started, but a lot of punk i listen to is from the 70's and 80's. i have to say that while bands that claim to be punk like good charlotte or new found glory are not punk (nor very good), i dont think real punk is dead, it just doesnt get much press. i think rancid is one of the greatest punk bands ever, and while its true theyve been around for a while, they still put out great stuff and are hardly what i would consider hangers on due to theyre fairly young age.

it is true though that i cant think of any bands that have popped up in the past 5 years or so that are anything amazing, but then, i dont listen to the genre religiously. if anyone has any pretty new bands that seem good id like to hear of them though.

Hmmm, how did I miss this one?

I'd say that most of what is called 'punk' now is really what they used to call 'power pop'. Music evolves. Punk used to have a (depending on whom you ask) socio-political bent to it. It became profitable and now it's just a $tyle of pop. What you might call the 'punk ethos' has moved on to a different type of music. Basically, if it's on the radio, you won't find much heart and soul, but more 'product'.

townshend88-

I like Rancid, but I don't know if I'd call them the greatest. Far better than Greenday. (BTW- have you noticed how many new 'punk bands' sound like Greenday?) For my money, Guttermouth is one of the best current bands (although they do tend to sound like Dayglo Abortions), but they are old, too, been around since the mid-80's.
