Having read the first draft (and Taipan can vouch for me on that), gotta tell you - you're all gonna be really, really unprepared for what this film is all about. If they pull it off, it might very well be better than Fury Road.

If they haven't changed anything, I'll say only that Tom Burke's character is named The Praetorian.

(Of course, they may have changed a ton of stuff and I could be wrong, buuuuut probably not.)

I'm so disappointed BECAUSE I knew that they shot a ton on location with real vehicles and real stunts. But that doesn't translate into the trailer at all.

In the first Fury Road trailer we had dozens of real stunts and car crashes, with one exception, and that was the big sandstorm.
Here we have so many shots you clearly can tell they are not real.

Third, fourth and fifth shots are, in fact, shot practically (or as practically as anything in Fury Road, at least). There's a heavy digital sheen and some compositing, but that's about it.

Simmer down! Wait and see.

WEIRD!!!!!! When I named the Thunderdome vehicles on this forum, (for a while) I gave Max's truck the name "Praetorian", before picking up "Powderbeast" instead.

Tom Burke's character name changed a bit and it's every bit as ridiculous as the "Immortan Joe" lol.

Yeah this entire story is completely different from Fury Road. Which might be worrying for people expecting Fury Road 2.0.
It's not that. It's a different type of story set in the same world. Don't get me wrong, there are great action sequences in it, really gruesome ones too (Instantly qualifying it for an R rating).
I think a good way to explain it is: all the previous Mad Max movies took place over a relatively short period of time. This one shows an evolution, or rather degradation and adaptation of people out in the wasteland over the years. You can even see that in the trailer if you look closely. George Miller calls it an 'odyssey' which does make sense from both the perspective of time, but also its scale, the 'epicness'. And what I really noticed is that this time around George Miller really borrowed a lot from Greco-Roman mythology for this one. It's not even hidden, it's right there out in the open. Which makes sense because Mad Max urged him to study storytelling and it seems like with Furiosa he's leaning into what he created storytelling wise.
Anyhow I'm gonna quickly brush up on Homer's The Illiad and the Odyssey for no particular reason whatsoever ;)

Ah, well. . . shit. I liked The Praetorian, but I get it. Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense narratively 😅.

You probably know a lot more than I do at this point, but from what little I do know, this tracks and it's got me very excited. I'm really digging how, in his later years, from Fury Road onward, Miller is really starting to engage and make explicit the metanarrative and mythological storytelling elements of his work that were always there.

Three Thousand Years of Longing is probably as forthright as he'll ever get with it in terms of exploring these archetypes and structures head-on, but even Fury Road felt a lot more consciously dense in it's iconography and dramaturgy - and especially so, considering the cut scene with the Aborigine that gives the entire thing a completely other dimension.

I also really like the idea that, where the original trilogy is a series of three mostly disconnected films, save for Max and his development, this and Fury Road, and possibly The Wasteland if it does somehow get made, are one big narrative. It's a reverse trilogy - my brother, when he saw Fury Road, said it felt like the climax to a much bigger story, and I think that's by design.

Your brother is absolutely right. It is the culmination of this epic narrative consisting of 3 stories that George Miller had written. It almost feels like there shouldn't be any more sequels after that. Which is why both Furiosa and The Wasteland are prequels. We're going to be tracing back this whole narrative for a while.
And I think it's a very smart idea, in the age of movies having sequels and prequels almost like an afterthought based on the success of the main movie.
Miller is really starting to engage and make explicit the metanarrative and mythological storytelling elements of his work that were always there
It's precisely what he's doing and I'm here for it.

I'm all for it. To me, Fury Road is a climax. The more the prequels are distanced from FR, the better it is. Fury Road is a perfect narrative arc, and I would not love that a given prequel/sequel would diminuish its meaning and impact.

I always though that The Wasteland was going to be a sequel, not a prequel. That's pretty much surprising.

I wonder if we'll get another trailer during the Super Bowl this month?

I hope so. The film is out in 4 months and we haven't got a proper trailer really showing off the film(at least compared to the Comic-Con Fury Road trailer that was released a year before release). Audiences were very divided after it and they really need to ramp up the marketing to build up hype.
