So, if the world is different, his backstory is different, and he only briefly has the BoB before it's wrecked, and perhaps it's set so far in the future that he wasn't even a cop in his backstory... and it's totally divorced from the successful MM1, MM2 and MM3...

... then it begs the question WTF even bother with naming him Max and calling the movie MM4?? Different character, different everything. Just pick a different movie name and character and start fresh... maybe use the Feral kid or something.

The more I learn about this abomination and destruction of Max, the more I really don't like it.

You should probably learn what 'reboot' of a franchise is instead, cause your bitching and whining is getting old.

Yeah, it's hard not to picture things defaulting to the Roadwarrior template. Good point about the lack of dialogue on Hardy's part.

Or maybe others will throw suggestions at him like Papagallo and Max will just punch them in the face when they get it right. :D

That's hilarious!
(Papagallo did deserve it though.)

And that is the point of this footage. It's a first look...for all we know it could be the stuff that wound up on the cutting room floor
But......there's something about it, it's Miller and it's most certainly Max. I am a big fan of Mel's early work, but I recon Hardy will carry the torch perfectly.
I keep coming back to that one shot in the middle of the clip of the "half arsed thumbs-up" He looks to be "a shell of a man". Now at what point in the movie this is I have no idea. But combine that with the opening shot(of the first look) and it's Max. It's him and the BoB....nothing else...as it's probably been for a long time. Then he ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, becoming the hunted, rather than doing the hunting.
I will handle "time line" inconsistencies. Yes in my perfect world all the stories match and yes there is nothing wrong with the old formula so why change.
As in racing, you're only as good as your last race, Miller is only as good as his last movie. He has the chance to tell (or re tell) a well known story. If he did not believe he could do it better, then he would not have done it.
I CANNOT WAIT for 2015, it can't come quick enough. I've been waiting half a lifetime (or a bit more) and I firmly believe it will be worth the wait :)
EDIT...but at the end of the day, it's just a movie, in the mean time I may need to get a life!

My criticism of his opening failure is more in long term story. I actually think it works well in the trailer. They are able to show the weird tattooing and stuff in context this way.

I noticed that too. It must be just cut for the preview. It must stay on that view for longer as Max flees.
also at that moment when the blonde wife suddenly lifts up her thumb and finger I'm pretty sure there's a slight frame jump

herein lies the problem.

a reboot means there's some elements of the original story. where, the only thing is his name and the car. i dont speak for everyone, but i LIKE MAX the way he was in the series and could care a little less about the car. but when you take away the elements that made the man, the man, then what is he?

i REALLY really REALLY just HATE this whole reboot/reimagine, whatever bullshit. it's just bullshit. there's no reason at all why he could not be the same character. case in point; thunderdome was a kids movie, they didnt know how to make it anything more than "bunch of kids in an apocalyptic world" until someone thought to throw max in. ptsd, i can live with that. he had elements of it after the first movie and after everything else that happened after that. but a teenage daughter? not being a cop? am i understanding these points right?

does miller even know his own story? he cant say "look, you fucking twat production company, max is my thing. it's not about car chases."? to think this is all his idea, and KNOW that it is, makes me think he's turning into another george that directed a couple of good movies and that's a hack now. romero is a hack.

this is essentially what happened to thunderdome, but they just threw in his name and the car. he's more than that, and shame on anyone that doesnt think that way. because they didnt need the stupid car for him in thunderdome. someone had a pitch for cars running off people's blood and mutants in a post apocalyptic world, and then someone said "hey, let's put max in it. except, let's just neuter everything about him." and george miller said "sure, let's do that."

Great post.

Miller has stated he's not interested in retelling the same Mad Max story. He's a highly creative man. This is about Furiousa now. This is someone elses journey with Max playing a key role.

Except it was Miller himself who had the "pitch" you're talking about. Jesus H Christ. You really think he'd come back to sabotage his own franchise? The man's a masterful movie maker. A true artist. It's not like this got handed off to some up-and-coming hack. He said himself he had no interest in another MM movie until this idea hit him. You really think if it was that shit an idea he'd have bothered spending a fucking decade of his life trying to make it?

Waiting almost thirty years for a new Mad Max movie and now pissed off it's not EXACTLY the same as the previous movies. Ridiculous. This would look like a cheap parody if it was shot like MMII today. CG's a way of modern movie-making now. Deal with it. It plays a part in almost every aspect of making any kind of movie.

No-one's even seen the movie bar two minutes of out-of-context and out of sequence footage and the whiners come out to play. At least wait until you've actually SEEN the thing before airing your grievances. Then it's fair game.

This movie's not just for you, the die-hard fans. I'm one of them but it's foolish to think any effort to resuscitate a THIRTY YEAR OLD franchise isn't going to involve retooling it so it's accessible to a new audience.

Fuck me. Can't you all have a little faith?

(Hopefully seeing an advance screening tonight in LA. If I have to eat crow, you'll be the first to know about it...)
