None so blind as those who won't see. Unacceptable to anyone who isn't okay with a man beating up the mother of his child. Here's $10, Chief. Go buy a clue.

Dude, he's done. He admits he punched her in the face while she held their child and then laughs it off as being drunk then threatens to have her buried in the rose garden. Sadly, this isn't just tabloid fodder. He's probably going to jail for this. His career's over for sure. No-one will work with him. Hate to say it.

I don't see this being a career ender. As I said, the public has a short memory. When have we ever held super stars to anything remotely resembling a moral standard?

Well, sometimes thy go too far even for us comback-loving Americans. Woody Allen's career took a big hit when he married his adopted daughter. It has slowly recovered, but never back to where it was. Michael Jackson's career hit the skids, until his death brought it back. O.J. Simpson's career as an actor and popular spokesman is completely over. To be fair, he actually killed his wife rather than just beat and threaten her, so Mel's career drop could fall somewhere between these guys on the spectrum. But at this point I'm guessing closer to O.J..
The big test will be whether or not he can successfully blame it on his alcoholism.

Most enlightened statement in this thread. We don't have to condone, excuse, or overlook his wrongness to wish him well and sincerely hope that he experiences healing.

I'm not a fan of what Mel has become, but I don't think it's fair to judge someone on such one sided evidence.

Racism and verbal/physical abuse is wrong. However people say crazy stuff when they are in an emotional argument, saying something and acting upon it are two very different things.

If Mel is a racist wife beater then he should be locked up, but concluding that is a matter of investigating the issues privately by experts, not by interpretation by the media or our speculation around a phone recording.

I don't really mind about Mel Gibson's private life. He's still a hell of a good actor and director. I will ignore this phone conversation as I ignore his comments about owning all Malibu and the racist comments he made over the last years. We are here, cauz of Max not cauz of Gibson.
I could probably make it on my own, but I like you kids.

This is bad and just getting worse by the minute. These tapes are so vile I'm sorry it looks like his reputation/career is almost certainly ruined. Heck I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up in jail

Can't help but think that Mel's an alcoholic who can't cope with his addiction, I've seen it many many times, and I see this pattern here too:

He got the job for MM after a fight in a bar, drunken durning MMBT filming, drunken anti semitic rant later on, turning to religion, now this. I's so damn obvious you'd need to see an optician if you can't notice it. Bare in mind, turning to religion is part of a 12 step program in AA, dude's an alcoholic, brainwashed at that. I knew it was kinda screwed up when I heard about his drunken behavior on MMBT set (check out MMBT making of when girls sing a song to him and he's chugging on beer), but this is out of control. Lost cause is all I can think of.
