Dude, that Jack Finsterer guy looks so much like Mel (with a dash of Billy Zane), it's scary. He'd be my choice.

Simple fact is, that no one can replace Mel Gibson in this role. Mel is Max. I think they should spare no expense to get Mel to play the role of Max again. :|

I still dont see why Mel cant do it. he performed well in We Were Soldiers a few years ago, and that involved more running and such then he would do in Mad Max anyway

We Were Soldiers came out March 1st 2002, so it was a a little over 6/7 years ago. As far as a new mad max, I can't see another mad max without Mel. He is MAD MAX and always will be.... I can't believe G miller could think otherwise. I'm hoping they will suprise us all with his involvement. Either way I'm still pumped for it's release!! Bring on fury road!!!

It's Mel himself that has lost interest in the project. His career has taken him behind the camera for producing and directing, and away from the acting side. It has nothing to do with money or being able to perform the action sequences.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Mel reprise Max. It is the role that made him a household name. Personally I feel it would be the best way he could thank his fans for following his career. I can't think of any of Mel's films I would not watch again.
At one time I didn't think anyone could replace Sean Connery as 007. But that franchise still lives on way past Rodger Moore.

True, but it's still like Indy 4 without Harrison Ford. Hard to take in until you see it. I'm sure if they get a good actor & miller steps in up with a well done story that really captures the essence of MAD MAX, I'm sure they can pull in off. I guess it wasn't just Mel Gibson that we all fell in love with in these movies. It was the character Max Rockatansky. Either way, I'm glad to know he'll (MAX) be on the big screen once again whether or not it's Mel Gibson or a new guy.

Back in December of 06 I found this interview on ign.com with mel & it gave me some hope, but I should probably just let it go.

IGN: Well, is there a film or film series you would like to revisit for a sequel or follow-up?

Gibson: Well, I always felt those Road Warrior movies were pretty cool, like they were in-the-gutter comic book stuff. It was like really pretty exciting stuff. I don't know. We began to mount one; it was a terrific idea that George Miller had and, boy, it was prohibitively expensive. But maybe there will be a time and place where that won't be the case. I don't know.

Myself, if I were Miller-for-A-Day I'd have to weigh the options even If Mel was willing.

Recast the part? Or use Gibson?

Neither is without risk.

I love Mel in the first 3 movies, but I'm going to have to say he's getting a bit long in the tooth now. Time to recast. I'd like to see him in a cameo, though.

I think Thomas Jane would be a perfect fit.

After seeing the Fury Road fan trailer, I do actually think Clive Owen would be brilliant.
If you see Children of Men, you see him play Max already, the unwilling hero who has a mission wether he likes it or not for the cause of morality and good. He has the looks to work it, is good with accents, isn't huge and has that gauntness to his face that would be typical to the situation. I have complete faith that he could do it.

Sorry to say, but the current state of young australian actors just seems to wooden and forced (The exception being Kokoda of course) and I just can't see it going down to the potential we expect.

Fury Road has so much to live up to, it needs to be as good or better than the first two (as good preferably) and not fall into the rudimentary storyling and action that BT had.
