The key to remember is thta, despite all the hoopla, the movies were not about customized cars, a fading culture and emerging monstrosity, not even about the end of the world, but rather about a man, a man who finds it in himself to do what is right in a world that has long forgotten the meaning of the word.
It's funny isn't it? The different ways people look at the first Mad Max movies. I always saw it as the story about a man.. so damaged and broken that he didn't care what happened to him. Reason was good, but only so long as it benefitted him. The guy was already dead basically. And he knows it. Like he says to Fifi in MM1 before he cracks: "..Any longer on that road and I'm one of them; a terminal crazy." And in MM2 after he wrecks his car, the only method on continuation and reason he has, the only option he has is to drive the tanker, which he knows is frought with peril, the most dangerous position to be in at that point. Look at Papagallo's expression when he hands him his shotgun and the shells, after he says: "..Believe me, I haven't got a choice... I'm the best chance you've got," like he's looking at a madman. A dead man. The fact that Max didn't take his own life - he had the choice open to him at the beach in MM.. the look of anguish on his face.. you never see that emotion emerge again. He could of physically killed himself then, but instead he concludes that he cannot let those f*cks do that to him. A part of him dies there, he leaves his mind and emotions on the beach, physically he goes on.. Driven by hate. Every shot of his face dipicts utter disdain for everyone and everything. By MM2, he doesn't care who he kills, think of the Gyro.. he's not actually evil, Max knows that, or Gyro would have just spiked him with the crossbow, but Max is going to slit his throat regardless, until he frantically mentions "Naaa!! Fuel! Guzzoline! Thousands of gallons of it! Much as ya want!!". That's the only reason Max doesn't do it, "Kill me an' you'll never find out!" And the reason Max doesn't follow Gyro and rest of them to their "place in the sun." He doesn't want that, the guy is dead in all but body.
Thunderdome I am ignoring, btw, as I reckon it may as well be about someone else. In my opinion, of course.
