The MFP would have been destroyed in the apocalypse, but their could still be remnants roaming about - groups of warriors trying to maintain order on the highways...

I really like the idea of Max coming across a city where a war is going on an basically the whole city is getting trashed - they could film it in abandoned buildings and so on..

But we have to have highways, lots of vehicles and heaps of crashes, stunts and people getting killed.

One thing I don't want to see is some sort of "the rebirth of society" subplot because it is kind of corny and that was part of the subplot of Thunderdome which didn't work and just ended up looking contrived.

Just give us the post apocalyptic setting and have the story focus on Max (the loner) and his struggles...

But the 'rebirth' of society is pretty much inevitable. Whether it is a new democratic one or a tyranny of some sort. People WILL gather together. If for no other reason than safety.

What I find interesting about the 'rebirth' in Thunderdome is that, while the usual human politics and backstabbing games were being played out, most of the people living there were working for a future of some sort. There was a code of laws (maybe a bit harsh, but there was a sense of fair play and justice) and some semblance of safety/protection. Notice that Auntie's guards act as a kind of police force (not necessarily her own personal thugs). There were rules of conduct: Max checking in his weapons as there are no weapons allowed in Bartertown, if you challenge someone it is settled by those two people (Thunderdome), and if you 'bust a deal, face the wheel' (break your word, promise, contract. This idea is foreshadowed in "Road Warrior", "He's an honorable man. He fulfilled his contract"- Pappagallo). Not a perfect system, but they were trying to eliminate the problems of the 'old world', not especially well, but the were attempting.

This brings me to the most disturbing part of Thunderdome.

In his saving and escaping with the children, Max destroys this society. While they were not the nicest people running it (and there were far more people affected than just Auntie, Ironbar, and Master/Blaster), they were not Humungus and his bunch, nor were they Toecutter's gang. I doubt that many other settlements would be very different. Very much a rough and tumble frontier town.

I really like the plot that Mud Guts posted. I'd love to see a Max movie like that!

Thanks, I been toying with this plot for about 4 years. The opening chase sequence could be a flaskback to MM2 period.

After seeing MM2 and before Thunderdome was filmed, I had a vision that the MM3 would involve warriors fighting in an arena in death matches to win fuel. etc. Who knows?

I think a City setting will be involved somewhere in MM4.

Detritus, you're smart. You touched a great point here. Maybe Miller wanted show HOW MUCH the concept "society" is painfully utopistic --- you can't create a society, man didn't suceeded in it during 2000 years and he's going to achieve this purpose nowhere in time. it's not possible. Anyway, BARTERTOWN was still too much "affected" by the old world. HOME - created by Savannah Nix - combined the values we never seen in OUR society, spiritualistic values based on the MATTER OF THE FACTS and not just on LEGENDS. Of course, it could be another caste built on "straws". Who knows? I don't think Thunderdome's ending is so much optimistic... but there is finally a glimpse of genuine hope for human race.

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I was unaware that MM4 is set between MM and MM2. I am glad, however. The second and third movies were OK, but I loved the original premise- where there is still some structure of society and morality that makes his conflict more intense ("so long as the paperwork's clean, you can do what you like",etc). Let's face it- after the world's been nuked, somehow shooting some barbarian with a crossbow doesn't quite seem as grissly as it should.

I can't imagine that this movie would take place at any other time than many (10? 15?) years after MM3. And unless there was some semblence of society, with people dedicated to particular jobs, the fuel would just run out. But, the title is "Fury Road," so you have to assume that there will be some on-road activity. I doubt the folks in this flick are chasing each other around on mountain bikes and rollerblades, so there should be some kind of automobiles. Perhaps by this time, there is a new defintion of "society" which is more all-encompassing than either the one at the refinery or the one in Bartertown. Max will either be part of it as a new kind of cop - or against it as the idealistic (or maybe Hammurabic?) rebel.

Either way, I can't wait to see the movie. It can't be any more disappointing to the series than the last two "Star Wars" movies weredo to theirs...
