Those examples of 'just fighting' are done not just to save his own skin, but to help the others achieve their goal and/or stay alive ... he deliberately puts himself in harm's way, and only by doing so does he begin to turn away from insanity and animalistic behaviour. While Max appears physically indestructable, it's his mind / humanity that's at stake!
