I've noticed there's a lot of criticism surrounding Furiosa's plan online (not just this forum). I will try to explain her "points" and strategy and what went wrong.

I don't think the plan was to go with the wives. I think Furiosa thought to escape alone, made a deal or something with the rockriders, then, the wives "begged her to come with her" and suddenly, what was just a desertion became a huge treachery... And what was just "a few vehicles in pursuit" became "3 war convoys"

Re 160 days : Furiosa said they had enough fuel to travel for 160 days , that doesn't mean the destination was that far away . they could travel for 80 days and then change direction ?

We don't really know, but Miss Giddy say something like "they begged her to go with her"... This sentence, for me, change a lot of things.
After for the "few vehicles in pursuit", you're point is good, we cannot really know what she had really in mind...

I'd have to agree with seriz though, it doesn't look like she was ever planning on taking The Five Wives. When she gets to the canyon she tells the whole bunch to hide, she was expected to be alone.

I'm no meteorologist but wouldn't any form of storm, particularly one featuring lightning, suggest a huge expanse of water must exist in the region? Don't those things run on humidity?

From what I gather, dust storms form because the sun warms up the sand which heats up the air above it and then it travels upwards causing gusts of wind that pick up small particles of sand and then it just goes. I don't think you need humid air for that, just cold air that starts moving up because it's heated up by the hot sand. Damn I'm no meteorologist either, just read that on Wikipedia

Also in a dust storm like that you wouldn't be able to see your own hand in front of your face. You certainly wouldnt have a huge open area of clear visibility like in the movie.

I've been thinking about this for a while and reading the post below got me thinking how this factors into the canon.

As has been pointed out, there are scenes in the first Mad Max (I know the post-apocalyptic universe is a bit different than other movies) where characters interact with the ocean or some other body of water. As the series moves into the wasteland, we are introduced to a world of desertification, but I've always been unclear what has happened to the water in the canon. We know it exists, but are the subsequent characters/story set in areas so far removed from these places that the oceans/lakes are inhabited by hostile people/conditions or...???

In the linked post, someone mentions that the video game trailer based on the movie covers dried seabeds with wrecked ships and whatnot. I looked for this, but I only saw a trailer that depicted such things rather than really explaining it. I also noticed when watching the movie where Max says that they won't find anything driving for 160 days which, as the one poster noted, is a ridiculously long distance by vehicle that should bring you into contact with some ocean body. Are we to assume Max is correct in his claim or simply mistaken?

As far as evaporating the oceans, I'm not sure that is practically possible on any timeframe that would allow a Mad Max Universe to exist. Again, someone mentioned in the above link that no amount of nuclear bombs are going to cause the oceans to dry up. Like the Fukushima disaster, radiated water (or at least particles carried by) will be a huge consequence from nuclear fallout and cause all sorts of problems but not evaporation. Climatically, the nuclear winter brought about will lead to lower atmospheric temperatures and destabilization that will kill plant life and lead to disastrous famine for the survivors. But no matter, the oceans continue to exist even if heavily saline/toxic.

Looking just at climate change/ecological disaster, the threat we currently face are rising sea levels and extended droughts or torrential raining/flooding (just look to why this movie ended up filmed in Namibia). As water evaporates, it circulates in the atmosphere in the hydrological cycle returning as rain. I've always understood that our atmosphere, with its chemical composition and gravitational forces, prevents a situation that you might see with Mars. For a runaway greenhouse effect (and ocean evaporation), such as we see on Venus, science says it will take (hundreds of) millions of years. It's difficult to come up with any scenario alone or in combination of a nuclear/ecological disaster that would lead to the evaporation of ocean bodies in such a short timeframe. That said, George Miller likes to speak about obeying the laws of physics (and presumably chemistry), so does anyone know if the oceans, in fact, exist in the world? Or if George has addressed this specifically in interviews because we do see them in the original Mad Max and nothing that happens between MM and the sequels would (or even could) explain the complete absence of water. Personally, I hope there is some existence of civilization near the water that could be visited someday that has adapted to the post-apocalyptic world in a different manner with different challenges. At the very least, I would like to know these bodies of water exist, and if not, have some kind of (semi) reasonable explanation for the conditions allowing nearly all surface water to evaporate yet those same conditions not leading to humanity becoming extinct. In my view, it feels like there is quite a bit of conflicting canon, to say nothing of science, and I honestly wonder how this is reconciled.

TL;DR What is the state of bodies of water in the Mad Max Universe? Has George Miller explicitly addressed whether they exist still (as in first movie), and if they no longer do, why not? And how did that happen? The easy explanation that all the water evaporated because of ecological changes/nuclear war is not scientifically sound over any timeframe that doesn't extend to thousands-millions of years. Is the better explanation that Max has wandered far into an exaggerated Outback/Sahara ecosystem? I'm not on top of everything Mad Max, so I'm genuinely curious. I just don't know if there's an official answer beyond speculation. Thanks.
