The final chase in Fury Road just does not work well.

The problem is everything happens randomly: Characters kill off one another, but there is no sense of progression or why someone gained a favorable position to threaten someone else: It is not even clear to me how Immortan dies... He is a guy with a handgun, in a high bulletproof car, and badly handicapped you just get near him?

A typical example is a bad ass woman character who does well against multiple opponents, and then is seemingly surprised by a roaring truck? You could hear that thing coming from a mile away... If they'd shown her to have lost hearing from a gun blasted near her ears I'd buy it, but not like this... She only has a rifle, not much effect on hearing... I'll note now that the death of the bow woman on top of the tanker, in RW, seemed similarly stupid: She leaves her purpose-built protected post to awkwardly expose herself, to get to someone she can't possibly help...

The worst part is the finale of the FR end chase: There was a reasonable and interesting goal for the good guys to accomplish, and instead of showing how and why it is accomplished, everything fades to black... Then we are asked to guess if it was accomplished... This is supposed to be "suspense" I think... I call it bad storytelling...

A particularly bad point is Rictus Erectus tearing off an engine's top: This was really down to Walt Disney level, and I didn't buy it for a second... Sorry but very little of the end chase works for me...

And I agree about the similitudes to "Waterworld". The "Citadel" population is not only strikingly similar to the inhabitants of the Smoker's *Exxon Valdez" (just a more desperate version), they are even shot in the exact same way when Immortan addresses them, Dennis Hopper style!

I think a voice over explanation of how the various cities-tribes relate to one another would have made us understand better what we are looking at, and lessened the bleak and barren impression the film leaves behind...

Nux is the only only who has a story arc. A Valhalla believing war boy who discovers the truth and turns on his false god, saving people. By all accounts, it should have been called Nux's tale.
Thank God it's not just me who noticed this.
