Having watched the original trilogy countless times over the last 30+ years I've always been under the impression that a Nuclear War happened between the first two films and most contemporary professional reviews seemed to assume this too. If that wasn't Miller's intention, it isn't terribly well communicated - the opening flashback/narration of MM2 ("two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all") and the film's entire scenario and storyline make little sense in any other context.

This is the general consensus, trust me. World War 3 and Nuclear Apocalypse BOTH happening inbetween MM1 and MM2.
Maybe it wasn't Miller's original intention, but then he changed his mind on this and "retroactively" adopted this aspect before Thunderdome ever went in production.
After all, the creature goes beyond the creator.
