I'm actually glad he didn't look hostile towards Beyond Thunderdome, the most visionary movie of the eighties. So I would say it's a win for me. ;)

I remember thinking to myself right when he described Thunderdome as wanting to “do something else, but didn’t know what it wanted to do.” ... wow, that's a really loaded statement. I wish he had elaborated more on that. Seemed he was implying that Thunderdome was something of a failure or at least off the mark. It was good to finally hear one of the principals involved question its pedigree!

I don't think so.
First of all, Thunderdome is a great movie, and Gibson is enough skilled to know that.
I think he was talking about the style of the movie, which was very hybridal and even experimental.

What do mean by "hybridal and even experimental"?

I read in a book once, a large hard copy one which has an official quote by Mel Gibson about each of his films up to 'Million Dollar Hotel'. I remember "most classiest c-grade trash ever made" - on Mad Max 1, "I love watching this film, it's a total freakout" on Road Warrior, and on Beyond Thunderdome - "I'm not making this, it's just a piece of shit". I think it was called 'The Films of Mel Gibson' or something. Will hunt it down and post up name and author if needed.

Hybridal = it mixes up different genres using the same style.
Experimental = it successfully tries new directions in terms of plot, ideas and feeling.

If Mel Gibson's opinion has any sense of perspective on the topic, (on which it probably carries more weight in this matter more so than lets say anyone else on the planet), then I don't see how you can make the equalization “do something else, but didn’t know what it wanted to do.” to "it successfully tries new directions in terms of plot, ideas and feeling."

Excellent link Max Replica. Im hoping there are some more indepth transcripts somewhere with more of what Mel said on the evening - that was the only thing the article lacked.

Miller is behind Thunderdome, not Gibson.

Said that, I'm the ONE to THINK it was hybridal and experimental, not Mel. I never "translated" what Mel said.
