Dave,
If you're not already planning to, I highly recommend you do a touch of silver dry brushing to the gun. It'll really help it look more like a real gun. Just a bit along some of the edges, the hammer, and other places where there would be a bit of wear to the gun's finish.

It's subtle but makes a big difference. And it's easy to do. And easy to undo if you don't like it or you screw up. You can see an example of one I did to an airsoft gun in my thread about my MM1 holster: (it's hard to see the weathering in the pics though)

You know, I never noticed that! Glad someone is paying attention. I'll have to take that part off.

I guess I'll give the dry brushing a go, too. I suppose the time is right to get the details of the gun and the case done right.

List and info about the medals and pins so far:

Silver rectangle in the upper left - match striker/matchbox holder.


Badge over the photo - 'tin hat day' pin issued as a fundraiser for 'Diggers'.


Two bronze star medals - Could be any of the following: The 1939-1945 Star, The Atlantic Star, The Air Crew Europe Star, The France and Germany Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, The Burma Star, or The Italy Star.


Two bronze round medals - look like coins showing a man wearing a rounded hat, probably The War Medal 1939-1945.


Top half, lower middle, small light blue pin of the Australian country, looks like a 'rising sun' emblem in the centre - seems to be an ANZAC Day pin of some sort.


Top half, lower right, round pin with a cross in it - red cross fundraiser pin.


Top half, lower far right - ???


Round pins (buttons?) on the lower half, right side - ???


Round button on the lower half in the middle - ???


Half circle "Australia" pin below the round button - ???


Skull - ???


The soldier in the photo may be an Australian Artillery Officer or NCO (by the sword). The uniform is the WWI style tunic and jodhpurs with a Sam Brown Belt.

A couple of additional points.

The 'guy wearing the round hat' is the crowned figure of King George VI. Here's a better view.

This raises an interesting point if you are imposing historical restrictions on the props.

Medals featuring George VI were issued for service in WW II. The photograph in the case is clearly, both by the uniform of the soldier and the 'fashion' of his companion WW I. There were certainly those who served in both conflicts but they would then have the medals relating to WW I. The only historically based conclusion that can be drawn is that the medals are not those of the person in the photo. Perhaps it contains the relics of his family through the years?

The Buttons are pretty common. I may even have some as my Father was a keen military historian / collector and Aust Reg Army for 36 years. I definately have the horseshoe AUSTRALIA that you can have.

The matchbox holder is a piece of 'trench art' sometimes made by the soldiers but often by locals for sale to soldiers using discarded brass and aluminium. The boxholder looks to be aluminium so is most likely WW II vintage. It would be easy enough to fold one from some sheet and dremel the patern.

The skull was a brass belt buckle which was used to make castings of the rest of the skulls seen in the movie.

After a long search, I was able to find a very similar skull, but originals are very rare, as are reproductions. They are the totenkopfs worn on a Prussian Hussar busby:

MFP 2020 made a simple resin reproduction that is probably better than anything you will find out there if you just want something that is reasonably priced. You'd have to contact him to see if he has any to offer.

Here's my gun case so far:







I stained it and got the felt on no problem. I still have to weather the case, fix the holes for the rounds, and of course get all the medals and pins for inside. I'm not going to use the rounds you see there; they just don't look right. So I'm getting some real ones.

Thanks to MFP 2020, I now have a skull for my case! I should be getting many of the other items soon. So far, I think it's looking great.
