Re: Belt, ax pouch, and can opener/knife for sale
I didn't think armourer was being rude or condensending at all... he actually said 'sorry' in his post. I almost posted right after him to say 'seconded'. I don't like hearing people callings magazines 'clips' either. But it's no big deal, just a pet peeve for some people, and no one is trying to make it a big deal.
Part of the fun of these boards is discussing the semantics of every little detail, at least for me. There is a lot of technical info here, and I don't mind at all being corrected when I'm mistaken about something (which happens quite a lot. Ask me sometime about the 'shooting the air tank' scene from Jaws). It's nothing personal.
And, your first post has only been up for about a day. Give it some time to see some interest; people go for weeks at a time before checking the boards.
I hope this little hiccup doesn't turn you away from this site again.
Regards,
HUMVEE Driver

Re: Belt, ax pouch, and can opener/knife for sale
That would be all well and good in the context of an enquiry, for example: if I had an item I could not identify and put it up on these boards for people to throw ideas around, and some called it this, some thought it was that etc...
Being that firstly I was calling it a clip pouch because I thought people wouild recognise it easier, being that 99% of action/war movies these days (mostly American) refer to them as clips. Am I right in thinking that due to this blasphemy that people complain to the producer or scriptwriter? No? Then why do so here?
I really would like this matter dropped now please, it's getting old. I didn't come here for this, I am simply offering something unique for sale.
Cheers.

pe·dan·tic (p-dntk)
adj.
Characterized by a narrow, often ostentatious concern for book learning and formal rules: a pedantic attention to details.
Like I stated in the first instance I don't wish to discuss semantics, that may be fun for others here and that is fine. I appreciate your opinion Humvee and your explanation of what it is that you enjoy about posting. you mention that you dont mind being corrected when you are mistaken. This goes for me as well, however I don't feel I was "mistaken", if I called it a Fart holder then I would be genuinely mistaken. In order for armourer to "correct" me he must have got the gist of what I was referring to. When a person hitherto unknown to me takes it on board to "educate" me, that could be misconstrued as a condescending implication. We all have diferent reasons for posting, mine is to NOT debate petty little inconsistencies that as you also attest are no big deal.
Thats my final word on this whole "Clip" vs "magazine" farce.
Cheers.

I'm almost positive it was you... a while back Mythbusters tested shooting an O2 diver's tank to see if it would explode. O2 certainly is flammable, but you need a spark to set it off. They said it was busted. Someone brought it up here. I said maybe, but that it certainly was possible. I think the tanks are aluminum (which I know doesn't spark) but are any old ones made of steel? What about the regulator at the end? Is that made from spark-able metal? And the bullet; yes, lead does not spark, but what if the round is a full metal jacket? Didn't M1's fire that kind of ammo? Could Brody have fired a tracer round? (I know that one's far-fetched.) I believe you spoke up in favor of the tank not exploding, and in hindsight I grudgingly agree. It's just such a great movie and an awesome scene that I want it to work, you know? Anyway, it's all in fun.the armourer wrote:

Re: Belt, ax pouch, and can opener/knife for sale
Back to the purpose of this post, I have sent a pic of the set to Karol, who will do some comparisons of the belt to some Blu-Ray scans from the movie. (Blu-Ray offers much higher definition and is something I do not have, I use HD-DVD which I don't have a copy of the movie in this format) This to me is completely needless, as I feel I have already done as much legwork on this as is possible. This was not something I requested, but Karol suggested I do so before he acknowledges it's authenticity. All rather inconsequential really considering the only part of the belt possibly incorrect (Just a style of reinforcing stitching) is hidden from view throughout the movie. Any-one know what boxer shorts Max was wearing in the movie? Was he wearing them at all? Has anyone ever thought about it with it in mind to replicate them or rummage through salvo's stores for matching ones? Same thing really. Speculating about something that is obscured seems a bit mad, but to each their own. The only way to be able to truly "authenticate" anything from the move is to have been there, movie stills and scans are far from definative, what may look to be this or that, in reality may have been the complete opposite.
I don't know if anything further will be revealed from what I have been able to see from the DVD stills I have. The belt as far as I can see is Identical to Max's, however if formal proof that it is not is forthcoming from Karol, then I will gladly change my opinion. What I will require as far as this goes is a detailed scan of max's belt at the back, behind his axe pouch where there is a pointed stitching pattern where the belt is reinforced for the shoulder strap to be attached. How one can get a back shot of max wearing the belt and sneak the camera in behind his various pouches for an extreme close-up escapes me (there is a triangular pointed stitched shape in the region where the shoulder strap front and back joins the belt at the waist which can only really be seen if max were to be wearing his belt without the pouches on it. From the DVD I have been unable to clearly identify this. In all other respects the belt is identical. And I am sure that identified or not the area in question is the same.
Cheers.

I vaguely remember the exchange, Dave. I think we agreed with Mythbusters that the ka-boom was pure Hollywood. Ammo types for the Garand were pretty much the same as the 240Golf you are probably used to, so you can draw your own conclusions on the outcome. The tanks definitely looked aluminum. The explosion on film was definitely from energetic material, not compressed air release. I call it 'Busted'.HUMVEE Driver wrote:I'm almost positive it was you... a while back Mythbusters tested shooting an O2 diver's tank to see if it would explode. And since it seems I opened a can of worms on this thread. I want to state again that no malice was intended. I'm used to dealing with professionals and I can be a bit snobbish at times. Just give me a smack to the back of the head and I'll chill out. I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything but I try to learn something new everyday, no matter how small. And I have been described as 'whimsical and pedantic'. I prefer 'RKI', Reasonably Knowledgeable Individual'. Now back to our regular programing....

I too intend no harm or malice, that's the last thing I intend to do. I admit that I can be a bit defensive sometimes, which is really hard not to be when trying to convey true meaning through typed messages. To me it is a very inappropriate form of communication...very impersonal and to a lesser degree antisocial as well. I stopped posting on this and other message boards for those reasons among others. Anything one states on a post can and generally is mistaken for all but how it was intended to be. So many have different ways of expression and interpretation, the end result can and quite often ends up in needless debate about what is being said and in what context it is being said. When we talk to someone face to face in person we rely on visual as well as aural cues to determine the meaning of what is being communicated. Speaking for myself here, I prefer to communicate directly to people in person. I know that is not at all possible on a forum, and that for me is the problem.
That being said, I thank you for all the explanations, and I do get now where you were coming from armourer, but was it all necessary in the first place? I ask myself this too as I am equally responsible, and my answer to you is....absolutely not.
Thanks.
Now does anyone want to buy this fantastic belt and accessories?

Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics on flashing bullets and more (scroll down): http://www.intuitor.com/moviephysics/ Also, a scuba tank is just pressurized air, not pure O2.

I hate to keep highjacking this thread... but you are right about the regular air and not O2. (I had to look it up) Although, I've seen what happens when just a compressed air bottle ruptures, and its certainly enough to kill a shark.
