Ok, I must admit I haven't read any of the replies, just the title. This might be a rehearse of things already posted, but it's the way I feel about the subject.
The world as we know it has gone trough cycles of warm and cold, and will continue to do so. In the past we had more than once "Ice Age" which just means that it gets hotter in between those ages as well. It's nature at it's best. And while it is admirable some feel that us lowly humans are to blame for the current temperature rises this is not the case. We have no significant impact on global warming. Hell, a single volcano eruption can bring the earths temperature down significantly.
The bad thing is... we won't be around to rub this in the Greenies faces.
I for one vow never to give up the V8 power plant for as long as I live. I used to have 4 bangers in Europe, but the first car I got in the USA was a 2005 mustang V8. And I've been hooked ever since. I've recently gone on a quest to see if I can reach 21 miles per gallon. Not because I want to save the planet, because I want to be able to say I got 21mpg in my mustang once. I'm driving the oil embargo speed coming back from work on the highway ( 55-60 miles per hour), never to work though, as I leave the house to late. I see 80+ mph regularly. I just can't keep my foot out of it sometimes. I got it up to 20.8 mpg. On a 50-50 cycle. And it was during that tank of gas I decided to see where 4th gear ends. Buck 35... I bet if I didn't do that I might have seen 21... for now... the quest continues...
The great thing about driving 55-60 is the engine rpm. Below 2k... try that in a measly 4 banger. It just isn't going to happen. My parents peug 306 was revving 3k at those speeds. I see everyone zip by, but coming back from work I got nowhere to go. Why waste the gas... unless I find a like spirited person tempting me, I'll be that asshole in the slow lane. But strangely, in the city I am one of those faster drivers, and usually leave everyone to suck my exhaust fumes at the light. Even if I am short shifting at 2-2.5k rpm.
